Samsung Sued Over Defective Blu-ray Players

It's no secret to those keeping track that Samsung's Blu-ray players have been troublesome since day one. A series of firmware fixes have been rolled out, and even with that, many are not yet satisfied.

A class action lawsuit was filed last week (.PDF) which claims Samsung has knowingly sold defective Blu-ray players to consumers since June 2006.

This is one brand to keep clear of.

I have one of their DVD ROM players, and it is nothing but trouble.

Just goes to show you.... Blu-ray players are not a good choice... of any brand. I'll stick with my DVD players and DVD DL player/Writer. Does evrything I need it to do, and more... I will never buy a blu-ray player.... just like I never bought the Beta max video players way back when....

This backs up my impression that Samsung has never been a good brand to buy anyway.

Samsung and other Blu-Ray manufacturers selling overpriced equipment with similar buggy features and poor customer support will keep Toshiba and the HD format on life-support just long enough for HD to make a comeback. Toshiba is practically giving away the HD-D3 Player which comes with 2 HD DVDs in the box, an HDMI cable in the box, and 5 more HD DVDs for free by mail for about $129.00 at Sam's, Costco, and probably other locations. Both Blu-Ray and HD discs are way overpriced. I use my HD player to play my standard DVDs and the upscaling in amazing. The sound has also improved. Thank you Toshiba for the essentially free updated player, but I'm not buying HD discs until the prices come way down. The difference between HD or Blu-Ray vs. upscaling regular DVDs is minimal at best. I watch on a 53" rear-projection screen at 1080i using a HDMI to Component (Digital to Analog) converter I bought for about $100 on eBay. Regular DVDs upscale beautifully and I didn't need to replace my "HD Ready" TV that was barely 5 years old. I buy DVD's used from local video rental store for less than $5 each usually around 6-12 months after the DVD is released. So for any of this technology, know what you are buying, decide what fits your budget, and don't get hosed. Caveat Emptor - Let the Buyer Beware!

Why is every one wondering that this is a big surprize. Does anyone remember Betamax by Sony?
Cost a friend of mine $700 (and then he had to go buy a VHS player).
The new technology is always going to have issues. I never buy the latest and greatest until it is mainstream. By that time the chaff (technology) will be washed away.

I've been hearing talk in Hi-Fi circles about how bad this brand is for several years now.
