I thought they were busy reaching out to Muslims now that the Space Shuttle program is defunct? At least that's what The Big O said they would be doing. And didn't they find a moon rock in some of Slick Willie's "papers"? I'll bet the found a few W keys in his suit pocket as well...

They don't want to mess with Slick Willy's rocks though - no telling where they've been.

""Joseph Gutheinz, a University of Phoenix instructor and former NASA investigator who has spent years tracking down missing moon rocks, said prosecuting Davis could prove tricky.""

Unbelievable! How much money was wasted setting up this grandma sting?

And seriously? This guy has nothing better to do then track down moon rocks? It's a rock! Maybe a moon rock but I'm sure they have plenty of them and they harbor no special powers.

Have you ever looked at the moon and wished you could touch it? There are people who would pay a lot of money to be able to do that, and have a piece of it in their possession.

The moon has universal appeal - almost everybody on earth knows about it.

There are only a handful of moon rocks known to exist on earth, compared to even the rarest earth mineral, or even compared to meteorites from outer space.

These are just some of the things that make them so valuable. There might be other reasons, such as religious belief, bragging rights, etc.

Yes, I believe that, but the woman had it in her possession. If so valuable, how did she get it? She said it was a gift, how do you dispute that, surely she didn't steal it.
I find NASA's way of handling the matter totally uncalled for. The money they spent in this 'granny sting' could of simply been given to her and they would have their rock.
Sometimes I think agencies just get full of themselves ... the idea of a 'granny sting' makes them look ridiculous. I state again, it's a rock. I see no purpose in it except for it's rarity.
They could have simply bought it back from her ....

Agents in SWAT gear raid a public eating establishment to arrest a 74 year old woman with a small rock.... who told them she had it and where she was..... Sounds like someone dug up Hitler and is retraining the Gestapo to take over Amerika.

Exactly correct Molly. The fact she had the rock isn't a crime because she couldn't have stolen it if no rock was mentioned stolen from inventory. Surely NASA keeps good records. She sure didn't build a rocket, take a trip up and get it personally, ergo, makes sense it was a gift. It was enclosed in plasti-glass, not something you run to the nearest hobby shop and have done with stolen NASA property.

Question for Uncle Sam,.. if all moon rock belongs to the US government, why does Russia own several pieces?... and what if I buy one from Russia, you gonna raid my home and take it? What if I find an astroid in my back yard or one strikes my house,.. you gonna claim that too? Oooops, I forgot, that has already happened to other people and you did.

Well I was just referring to why it's so valuable. But I don't fault granny for possessing it; I believe her story that it was given to her husband.

On the other hand, it's not legal to sell it in the US and she must have known that because she made references to selling it underground. She was fully prepared to sell it illegally and (I assume) also to avoid paying taxes on the transaction. So it makes sense that they should keep the rock without charging her with a crime, even though her attempt to sell was technically illegal.

The arrest was clearly an over-reaction. They could have walked in with 4-5 sheriff's deputies and even that would have been more than enough.
