Gateway Monitor Recall?

Sorry, but I trashed it. My fault, as I was disasembling it pieces of plastic were snapping off as I carefully used my putty knife to seperate the front and back halves. This would have probably been alright but I forgot about the tiny ribbon cable for the front bezel control buttons and it too snapped off. Anyway, when I removed the power board I was able to confirm 5 out of the 7 caps were bad - all swelled on top. Chalk this up to experience. Besides, at today's prices for monitor I'll buy a new one. By the way, this problem with the capacitor plague doesn't apply to new equipment today does it?

Hi! I have the same problem with my gateway fpd1976w. A lot have been saying its the capacitors but how do you open the monitor to check? The monitor doesn't have screws. Can anybody please show us how to open this monitor? A video must be a great way to follow instructions. Thank you

My 2185w started doing this about 6 months after I got it. For the last 2 years I've usually just pcycled to get it going again, but it's gotten worse. Took me 10 minutes to get it going this last time. Disappointing.

Drop a line to Sprint6@ zoom internet . net and i may be able to help with this monitor repair. This model is one that I have repaired many of. If you can take some high res photos this would also be helpful to resolve the issues you are having.

I have a Gateway FHD2400 series display, and it's the one with the bells and whistles. Display decided it wanted to display a red screen on the right hand side of the display while the Left side was "normal". Tried the other inputs, but similar results. If this was an old T.V. with the CRT in it I'd be thinking it was in the chroma circuits, but seeing as this is a display with ASIC's and such, that's not likely. Similar issue bad capacitors? I'll look for schematics in Sams Photofacts (just in case...) but inputs are welcome.

Are you going to repair it? Find any swollen electrolytic caps inside?

Ditto. FPD2185W via employee purchase after [expletive deleted] weaseled themselves an exclusive contract for the University of Arizona. Goes blank in a few minutes after a cold start, thereafter stays blank, light is on but nobody home. It's sitting by my door waiting for me to find a repair shop. UofA dropped them along with their campus repair facility. I found a yellow-pages ad for a repair shop that does Gateway work, but couldn't find it. At least the adjustable stand still works holding my HP w2338h that I purchased for less than the discounted Gatewa[explitive deleted] that still works fine after three years. I can't understand how that 'G' company stayed in business this long. According to an Amway salesperson I knew decades ago, there's a new batch of suckers that graduate from high school every year.

I have the same problem with a Gateway monitor that stopped working after the 1 year warranty expired. This calls for a Class Action Lawsuit.

Trudy,

Lawyers only win in class action lawsuit. Your best course of action is to learn why this has happened.

Rather than bang your head against the wall, get help with repairing your monitor or find someone who will repair it on your behalf.

The FPD2185 is an excellent monitor. All it needs are the defective capacitors replaced.

You remove the stand and with a flat blade screwdriver slowly pry front bezel out of case. It is retained by plastic snaps. carefully lay monitor screen down and back will come off.

Well I've had mine for about 6 years now and had no problems at all. I must be a lucky one unless they they made a modification before I purchased mine.

lucky U which model do you have and it manufacturing date may be a good idea to get the caps and do the repair before it goes down and thakes other commponents with it when it does fail. So few of them that have not had service and still working. just got one in, 2485W that just went down a few days ago, that was used every day since it was purchased in 2006.
