Own a Gateway flat screen? Then you own a defective monitor that will go dead in about 12 months. Worse still, if it's out of warranty, Gateway will do nothing to replace or repair it.

But don't take my word for this. Do a Google search and you'll find that people with these monitors are saying they don't last beyond 12 months.

Anyway, join us.

Go to the website below and tell us about your experience with your Gateway monitor.

Also, leave a way of contacting you.

This may take some time, but we've got to get Gateway to acknowledge their monitors are defective and to fix the problem.

Thanks

I agree with consumer. I purchased a gateway monitor FPD2185W and little more than a year it stop working. I called gateway and got comments "Sorry" "Take for repair" I called many shops and all suggested it was not worth repairing. I opened the monitor myself to repair power supply (circuit board). The LCD screen is a Samsung. I found many consumers on the Internet with same issue and also with the Flat TV screen. I suggest dont buy Gateway and if so purchase extended warranty with store. I will never buy Gateway again not even in action.

Ya, I've had my gateway fpd2185w monitor for about 2 and a half years, then the other day it wouldn't come back on. I hadn't turned it off for months then I turned it off, and it wouldn't come back. The blue power button stays on and won't turn off when i press/hold it. I checked all the cables and such, they are fine. I also did what Shanoc11 did. I too took it apart and found out that the monitor is a samsung. It seems such a waste to just throw it away, someone please help me! Thanks.

We have also had the same problem with the Gateway monitor and will be taking your advice on how to repair it. Count us in on the class action law suit. It was out of warranty by 1 month. Thank you for taking the time to post the remedy.

I purchased a Gateway FPD2185W Monitor about 18 months ago, and I have the same issue with it. I turned it off and when I turned it back on there is no video. The blue power light stays on. Same response from Gateway as everyone else. They have no interest in dealing with it. I am not sure what remedy Deborah and Bob mentioned, but I don't seem to have one.

Yep, same here, FPD2185W with no video, blue power light stays on and can't be turned off. I purchased the monitor as a closeout at Office Depot for $200, so they will only give me a $200 gift card. Guess I should feel lucky, but $200 won't begin to replace this monitor, which I loved while it worked! If I thought I could get it repaired so that it would really last awhile, I would be willing to pay some money to do so, but don't have much confidence in that approach. Anybody able to repair it or know someone who can do so at a reasonable price?

monitordepotusa.com fixes them for $98. Have had a few 2185's fixed there with great results.

I buy and repair broken LCD monitors (sell refurbs on ebay) Most of the Gateways I fix have a common flaw. Gateway did a very lousy job selecting their supplier for the power board. Whoever makes the power board uses CHEAP components that won't last. Gateway needs to wake up and do a better job selecting their vendors.

I also buy broken monitors so if you decide to purchase a new one to replace your Gateway let me know. I'd buy your broken one. It's better than throwing it in the trash and filling up landfills. You can contact me at sure-power@nc.rr.com

This issue should be presented to a law firm with the needed resources which specializes in such maters - obviously Gateway is trying to get away (with multiple precedents) with selling expensive LCD monitors with defective capacitors and doing nothing about it.
The issue is well documented - the problem is the use of capacitors with "pirated" electrolyte formula which causes the capacitors to fail within a short period of time (due to release of gas by the electrolyte during normal operation and use).
I have a full set of FPD2185W defective caps on hand - they have been identified by the manufacturer as "defective" and yet Gateway refuses to do anything about it - unlike other manufacturers who were affected by this same problem (for example, motherboard manufacturers Soyo Group, Asus, Abit, MSI, DFI and Gigabyte among others).
Many manufacturers used voluntary warranty extension to fix or replace the defective units, some even offered to replace defective caps as a matter PREVENTION (i.e. even if they have not failed yet) and some offered refunds, exchanges and/or upgrades as an option as well.
When I confronted Gateway with this issue, they stated that "they don't actually make the monitor; therefore it is not their problem". I am sure any reasonable person would disagree with such a naive excuse :)
Since we work with semi-conductors on a daily basis, I have some relevant documentation (and pictures) to support he above - I hope we can generate some interest in filing a class-action suit against Gateway - should be easy and relatively cheap to build the case, given the existing precedents.

Cheers

I'm sure if the monior caused a fire or personal injury when they failed, Gateway would have been forced to recall all of them. Since this isn't happening they can tell their customers "nothing we can do sorry".

Gateway should have never ever used the capactior vendor they chose in the first place. They need to do their homework and force their suppliers to use more reputable component manfacturers in their products.

I bought a $600 Gateway flat screen monitor from Bad Buy and it went dead out of warranty. I took it in for repair and after 2 weeks I got a call from Bad Buy that they can't repair it and are shipping it back to the store. They told me I need to have an authorized Gateway service store repair it! Try to find one. They are more than willing to sell me a new Gateway monitor for $400. Such a Deal! I will never ever buy a Gateway product again and neither will I shop at Bad Buy any more!

My 22" Gateway FPD2275W came from Best Buy and died a few months after Gateway's 1 year warranty expired. Tech support was a joke. Their recommendation was to buy a new monitor, preferably a Gateway. Pfft, idiots. Anyway, I'm down with a class-action lawsuit. But while that's in the works, here's what I've been up to:

I disassembled the monitor, removed the power board, and found a bit of info that led me to this site:

http://www.acesuppliers.com/supplier/informat...

I'm documenting this process of attempted repair on the monitor and, if successful, I will post back here with a step by step guide.

I'm planning on making a short angsty video about this whole debacle as well. I'd love to see a dent in Gateway's profits for not taking backing their $400 product. It's not worth throwing out this monitor because of a bad power supply, but if that's all they will recommend to me, then consumers need to be made aware of Gateway's flippant attitude toward it's customers. Well, that's my two cents. Peace.

Same issue as everyone else (as far as I can tell.) I'm helping my mom with this monitor. She was incredibly pissed when Best Buy saw no harm in suggesting she buy another monitor from them when her monitor (just over a year old) was as good as a doorstop.

I'm a 3L in law school with a Masters in Computer Science. Obviously, not being a lawyer (yet), I can't give anyone advice on the merits of a particular claim here.

BUT I can say that I am looking forward to being in the position, shortly, to take companies to task for defective products. And I don't think very highly of Gateway at all.

We are also having the same exact issue with our LCD monitor. The Gateway representative had lots of attitude and blew me off. They no longer have authorized service dealers and I was told to go find a repair shop.
I will never buy another gateway product.
