The New York Times said Monday it is scrapping a two-year-old program to charge fees for access to parts of its Web site, including op-ed columnists and archives dating back to 1987.

This is great news. I hope that it will be possible (and simple -- no long URLs) to "deep-link" into old NYT news stories.

If every American was compelled to read the NY Times (no, not the editorials; just the news stories), this would no longer be a "Bush-league" society. By giving us ALL the news- and not just a few excerpts (surrounded by nonsense about celebrities-gone-wild)- the Times lets us see the world for what it is and our "leaders" for what they are. No interpretation is necessary, no hyperbole is indulged in. Just the news, ALL the news, and not the condensed, selected or fairly unbalanced versions.

Lawrenz, you're not serious! Tell me you're not serious. The whole d__ &*^$%(&!! paper is an editorial! As certainly you're aware. Of course this is std. practice for media of any ideological slant and, of course most be compensated for.

Andrew- I'm completely serious! Have you read the Times or do you base your assertions on the propaganda of Fox News? I would suggest that you read ONLY the news stories in the Times- never mind the editorials (which aren't so far off to the left anyway...)- and see if you don't end up with a whole new perspective in a reasonably short period of time. The Times gives you material that you won't get anywhere else- and certainly not in the right-wing tabloids whose sins are mainly those of omission (if you don't cover the coffins, you can say the war is going well).

We can only assume that you can't think for yourself. Like the man said, forget about the editorials. The New York Times is known around the world as the "Paper Of Record". How liberal were they when they bought into the Bushco lies and stood solidly behind the invasion of Iraq?

As for "All American Shmoe". Take a Quaalude, drink a six-pack (or 2) then try a different labotomist. The one you worked on you, really screwed up. It always pays to get a second opinion!

On second thought, take 2 Quaaludes and a fifth of Absinthe! The New York Times has been around a lot longer than you and will be around long after you your demise!
