John Dobson: Grandfather of Modern Amateur Astronomy
I became interested in astronomy 10 years-old when I saw Saturn through a telescope at my local astronomy society.

I had met John back in August '03 at the Boothe Memorial Park in Stratford Connecticut when the Stratford Astronomical Society had a 'Mars Party'(Mars' closest approach to Earth - biggest angular diameter).
Nice guy, we had a chance to sit and chat for a few minutes. He did a bit of a speech, had a small video presentation (this was just after Stellafane and he was on his way through CT headed down south to some other engagement). He actually asked to borrow my 11x80 binocs to try to spot the rising M31 (Andromeda Galaxy) before the telescopes could.
He was a bit shaky with their weight, but I spotted it and borrowed a tripod to steady them - he then saw it and did a few-minute extemporaneous riff on M31. Still quite a good memory at his then-age (almost 88).
I was saddened to hear of his passing last month. A wonderful Man.
