Computers attempt to mimic brain function
It goes without saying that the human brain is complex, and would be hard to build from scratch.

Article author ... is completely clueless. The brain isn't that complex, we've figured it out. It's the laws of logic we're still working on, and the neural network simulations just require better hardware, we almost have the power so meh, not big news.
Also, it's not "human" intelligence we're trying to simulate, it's organic intelligence, that's the boundary. The organic systems are dynamic, completely dynamic, which computers require more cycles to process dynamic systems.
However, SPAUN is a failed lineage, it's a science project. We have game engine AI's that can process the same pattern recognition mentioned in the article, and those work real time. We have programs that do actually learn, we know those laws and algorithms already. If you're going to try to reinvent the wheel, expect a wheel.
