Around here a car that cannot exceed about 70 mph is a road hazard. I5 and I80, to name two, have traffic lanes operating in the 80-90 range and driving at the posted 65 will bring on a bout of road rage. If all my driving was in the neighborhood where 45 is too fast, I might use a hybrid. First convince me that the batteries will last for more than 50,000 miles OR that they will cost less to replace than maintenance on my 52 mpg Diesel!

A Prius's top speed is 103 mph. It could be even faster but the computer limits top speed.

And also a hybrid typically has *better* acceleration than an equivalently equipped gas only economy car.

Sure my friend gets 40mpg around town. I don't commute far, probably would use about a 12 gallon tank a month. (if I could to afford to buy new) I would like to see more of a small wagon, like a Fit, Matrix, XA or XB, or perhaps something by Suburu go hybrid. I go camping and don't want to pay the extra premium for an SUV, plus I prefer the handling of a smaller car.

I'm waiting for the Hydrogen Fuel cell the size
of a big shoe box providing unlimited power and
speed throughout a whole year, then you replace it. electrically driven wheels, each with it's
own motor. a body shell made of epoxied kevlar
with a titanium skin for durability.

My dads prius was really fast,it would go up a six percent grade for 13 miles at whatever speed you set the cruise control at,i was talking to my dad and mentioned that he didnt need to go ninety up the grade to impress me so he slowed down,he really hadnt noticed he was going so fast.im not crazy about the xtra cost for the car considering the mpg of a more conventional car,the yaris with the cvt trans gets almost the same mpg as the prius.my dad has the camry hybrid now and likes it.I like the GM volt car i saw on a auto show preview.

Agreed, in 5 years, Hollywood will forget about the "climate crisis" talk ,Al Gore, and this whole fad will be parodied in shows like The Simpsons.

The electrical system on a hybrid is a closed system, how exactly is any electricity being "wasted"?

I have a Audi A8 and it is fine.

I think MOST hybrid cars look butt-ugly.

The Toyota Prius looks like a computer mouse on wheels. I would have a hybrid, I can afford a BMW even but I'll wait to see if they make something that has a good look to it. In a few years, the hybrid shit will probably be phased out by something else.

BMW is supposed to come out with their hybrid for the 2009 model year. I believe it'll look the same as their other models. What they're going to do is a combination of capacitors (instead of batteries) and a steam-driven! energy regeneration systems that used the hot exhaust gas. I think I heard something in the range of 10-15% better fuel economy.

As of the 2008 model year, they're already charging the main battery with braking energy.

Most of the new cars look the same to me.i look forward to diesel powered vehicles,if they could just make most vehicles lighter and add the diesel!you could probly drive a prius for a few hundred thousand miles and by the time the batterys die,it would be time to get rid of the car anyhow.heard on the radio 8o plus bucks for oil, just wait and see if we fight with iran!i try not to drive anything that wont get 30mpg,i dont see how people can live with sub 20 mpg vehicles!
