Solution, or Mess? A Milk Jug for a Green Earth

A simple change to the design of the gallon milk jug, adopted by Wal-Mart and Costco, seems made for the times. The jugs are cheaper to ship and better for the environment, the milk is fresher when it arrives in stores, and it costs less. What’s not to like? Plenty, as it turns out.

Most folks are still having a hard time recycling plastic materials, having a proper receptacle bin available for placement of the materials. The USDA / FNS / FDP is now issuing UHT Milk - Ultr High Temperature homogenized, which is shipped in 12pk / 32oz cartons - good shelf life but best if chilled prior to consumption, no health complications noted or reported at this time...

I stumbled across that milk in a Kroger store in Myrtle Beach, SC while camping at a beach campground. Great for camping or travel trailers, but I've not been able to find it since.

I'm not much of a milk user so don't buy fresh milk. I'd like to be able keep some of the UHT stuff on hand, if I could find it locally.

After reading the article and watching the video, there is but one thing I can say..... Judas H. Priest!! Is there no common sense left in the world today?

People need instructions on how to pour out of a jug with the spout on the corner? Haven't they ever poured out of a gallon rectangular can?

No wonder this country is going down the tubes!

Went to look that up in regards to retail outlets, appears to have the same stigma as selling biofuels - sounds like a good idea but no one is willing to take that step against the establishment. Dairy farmers claim foul against the government for pushing this through, fresh milk is good if you consume it at a healthy rate - while others tend to let it sit for awhile and/or use a little at a time since most of us prefer "cheese on that please"... Probably best to take a look into the "big box" retailers, most likely hit or miss until popularity picks up...

When I found it in Kroger's, that was 1981. I've been looking for it off and on ever since. If it hasn't gotten popular by now, I don't imagine it will happen any time soon.

Thanks for the info though....

Check out a Publix store if you have one nearby. In the coffee section there are a few milk products of which you seek. Two are made in Britain. Does'nt taste to bad either. Last for 6 months. I take it sailing. Wish I could think of the name. Tomorrow dude>>

Thank you. No Publix stores in this area but I was able to order a case on line. I'll use it mainly for baking, so I can freeze most of it.

Back in the "old days" I'd have just made a run to the grocery store, but that costs $8 these days. I only go once month or so now.

Glad you found something that will work for you. The name I was thinking of is Parmalat. As I said it will keep for six months on the shelf.
