Russia to develop nuclear-powered spacecraft for Mars mission

At its recent meeting, the Presidential Commission for Modernization and Technological Development of Russia's Economy called for developing a transport-energy module with a megawatt-class nuclear propulsion unit.

This is good news for the U.S., Russia's economy is like 10 years behind the world, selling natural resources acounts for 34% of their income. The more they spend on useless crap like this the less they spend on economic investments :).
Its funny to see the Russians play catch up and spend like 5% of their budget on something that U.S. spends .000005% of there budget on. Russia should depose Putin and install a new king, err Tsar?

If Russians were so backwards, why did NSA called on them to help in their space program?
Why do they use their rockets?
Why do they cooperate with then in space?

You seem to forget that it's the US that had to do a lot of carching up: Soviet manned spacecraft existed well before American ones!!

I did not say Russia is backward in the space department, I said they re backward in the economic department. And this is partially caused by developing the latest space technology which is very expensive, while the cash-strapped russian economy desperately needs investment especially in high-tech sectors.

I never said that Putin destroyed Russia: I believe just the opposite. He is the best leader Russia could wish for!

Bragging about America's wealth probably make you feel good, but how much do you have yourself?
Per capita, Americans aren't the richest people.
Scandinavians and a bunch of other countries have higher GDP per capita and better standards of living than America.
Beside, America is living on an ever-increasing budget deficit, and started declining already.
