Bush Plans to Veto Stem Cell Bill

Pushing back against the Democratic-led Congress, President Bush intends to veto a bill Wednesday that would have eased restraints on federally funded embryonic stem cell research—work that supporters say holds promise for fighting disease.

At the same time, Bush will discuss at a White House event his efforts to encourage work that could make additional stem cell lines available for research, presidential spokesman Tony Fratto said Tuesday. via Breitbart.com

Ignorant idiot. Bush would imprison Galileo if he were still alive.
Obviously the Commander-in-Chimp doesn't care that stem cell research could one day regrow some of those lost limbs our soldiers have suffered in his pointless Oil War.

I think he is an ignorant jerk he wants to spend our money on a pointless war that is giving us back nothing of use, and see millons of soliders die or injured and then not help them and their families. I resent the fact I'm related to him on a distant branch. I hope Hillary or Obama wins the election and stops this senseless war and puts the money where it needs to go.

And I suppose "Hill-billary" the carpetbagger is your saving grace, huh? Stem cell research on embryonic tissue gathered from MURDERED BABIES has been proven fruitless, and strangely enough, stem cells from tissue other than embryos has proven to be very successful. It gets to the point that regardless of your spiritual, religious, or political background, WHAT WORKS WORKS, AND WHAT DOESN'T DOESN'T. Calling Bush a chimp doesn't solve any problems. I could have(and have on occasion) called Hillary Clinton an irritating bitch (many liberals out your way agree that she is -- read the Huffington Post if you don't believe me), but that won't solve any problem either.

Name calling gets us no where. Upstate New Yorker(UNY) need to realize any unassisted embryonic tissue has about as much chance of being a baby as a severed finger from a butcher.
But there is some lessons in UNY ramblings: Science without ethics is a very slippery slope. We need to press forward, but tread lightly. Science will press forward, with or without federal funds.

While I agree that science is sometimes used without thinking of the consequences first (sp. sorry, it's late, I'm sleepy) I believe that some embryotic stem cell research needs to be done. There could be all kinds of "cures" that are just waiting to be found. But there has to be limits put into place as to what can and cannot happen. And, yes, Scientist in AZ, science will press forward with or without federal funding. But then, it will press on without guidelines as well. We've already managed to engineer ourselves into trouble many times before, we don't need to do it again and again. But, then, that's human nature I suppose.

I hope this post made any sense at all. I took a new allergy med tonight, I'm all loopy and can't spell, so I apologize.:)

Adult stem cells have already produced significant cures. Embryonic stem cells have produced none.

Adult stem cell research poses no moral dilemmas. Embryonic stem cell research does.

Why not promote the agenda that has shown some progress and abandon the agenda that has shown none?

Inflammatory rhetoric only polarizes the issue and delays the possibility of saving and improving lives.

I wish every one would March on Washington , Call their Congressmen and Senators . And Impeach the Dumb Jerk . I`m so sick of Bush getting his way with his Twisted Adjenda . I bet he was the 666th Baby born on that day . And I bet he had a Blue turbin on in his Baby picture . Nostradamas . Now that nearly every other Nation in the world Hates The USA . I truly still do not understand why People voted for him a second time . He got in Illegaly in the first place . With his Brother Jebby fixing the Ballot . And they are all on the take from the Big Drug Company`s . Thats why Billions are spent every year on so called research . But it`s funny , they never seem to find a cure for any thing . But the drugs cost too much . and our health care system is a total train wreck . Doctors don`t want to cure any one ! they just want the whole country to be On antidepressants .

The question should be, What the hell is Government doing spending Tax Dollars on this issue? Not which cells you like or dislike. That is a distraction.

Duuuuuuh!!!!!! Roadrunner48808 has a better command of the English language than you do and she admits to being "loopy" on some medication. What are you on? Is it legal of illegal? Take a remedial English course before you post any more comments!

That says it!
Much of the time you do not hear the fact that the debate is over embryonic stem cell research only.

Note the headline.“Bush Plans to Veto Stem Cell Bill.”

Too bad we just can’t veto Bush. Did anybody notice that, having ordered the flag to be flown at half-staff for 30 days in honor of former President Reagan, current President Bush curtailed the time by three days so that the flag wouldn’t have to be flown at half-staff on the Fourth of July?(Not that we don’t fly it at half-staff on other days — like Memorial Day for instance.) Wouldn’t it be great if we could similarly curtail current President Bush’s time in office by 10%? Let’s see … that’d come out to a little over 292 days. Wow! That means he’d already be out now. Ah, but then who’d be in? Cheney. Can’t win for losing.

Sorry for the repeat. Like twocentsworth, I too still truly do not understand why people voted for him a second time.

But I digress. I mean the double entry made above. The webserver told me I had “an error” on my first attempt at submission. Didn’t say what the error might have been, and I was unable to recapture the original page, so I rewrote it.

Is it even remotely possible that the "fruitless"ness of embryonic stemcell research is because of current bans on those studies. Maybe embryonic stem cell research was proven "fruitless" by rouge scientists with no fear of breaking current laws? Is it possible that adult stem cell research has proven valuable because some of the top researchers have embraced it in place of illegal procedures and that they might make bigger strides is not so limited?

Leaving the moral ramifications aside (just for now...) embryonic stem cells are undifferentiated cells. Adult stem cells are differentiated. That is, an adult blood stem cell is a blood cell. An embryonic stem cell is just a cell -- no way of knowing what kind of cell it will become. That is a serious problem.

Perhaps you have read about the man who received embryonic cells in one of the lobes of his brain to relieve the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. Several weeks into the process the man began to experience excruciating pain and eventuall died. NOT from Parkindson Disease. The post-mortem showed that the embryonic stem cells eventually began to differentiate. The stem cells were becoming teeth -- inside this man's brain.

It should also be noted that there was not one, single embryologist serving on the investigative committee on stem cell research oversight. This is equivalent to creating federal policy on say, heart bypass surgery, without any input from cardiac surgeons.

Dr. Frankenstein would probably steer clear of
embryonic stem cell research. We should too.

And, the person ("Daboz") who raised the point about whether or not the American people should be forced to fund ANY of these experiments makes an excellent point. Nowhere in the constitution is government authorized to fund medical experiments. Having visited Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps I can verify that government should steer clear of that whole area. When it goes "bad" it goes very bad.

Also, let's not forget that the original embryonic stem cell lines were created from embryos whose genetic history is VERY sketchy.

In other words, what diseases or serious clinic conditions would these embryos (had they been allowed to develop) have inherited?

In our quest for cures are we inadvertently making matters worse? Are we proliferating genetic material by using embryonic stem cells that are more "sick" than the recipients?

Adult stem cells are differentiated and have a known history. In fact, the patient himself/herself can often donate their own healthy stem cells. The body will not reject its own cellular material.
