Sportswoman of the Year
#1 May 6, 2009
It is pity that MR. Liu Guodong was not nominated as the coach of the year by STTA. I believe most of Singaporean agree with the sports award council that he does deserve such award.
Without his help, could we have obtained the 1st medal in Beijng Olympic after so many years wait? I m so shocked to hear from Ms Lee Bee Wah that result is not only criteria for STTA to assess their coach. The coach is to help players impove their skills while result of the games are the only indicator to reflect this. If result is not that important, what else is important? That means any Tom & Henry with those attributes mentioned by Ms Lee can become the coach of year if citing Ms Lee's words. If like that, then sports game will not become more like a party than a competition.
Worst is that today I read from the Straits Times that Ms Lee added that less than half of Olympic pingpong players agree to elect their coach. It further proved that problem solving skills and leadership can't never be associated with Ms Lee Bee Wah.
She shouldn’t have made such comments to the press. How can other coaches be motivated to devote to their work with such leader? How can we attract good coach to strengthen our pingpong team? I am really worried how far can our table tennis team go? Let's see what will happen in London 2012.
