According to OutSports.com, of the 10,708 athletes at the Olympics this year, just 10 have identified themselves publicly as being gay. Of the 10, Australian diver Matthew Mitcham is the only male gay athlete.

Yesterday, Mitcham won the gold in the in the 10m platform diving event, scoring an upset over the Chinese team, which was heavily favored to win. But as Maggie Hendricks at Yahoo’s Olympics blog notes, NBC never mentioned Mitcham’s orientation:

I've seen this picture 2 or 3 times today and is it just wishful thinking on my part or do they look like they're about delve into some hardcore sex. Or is it they've already crossed that road before?
Don't know if anyone else caught them but sometimes when they were being filmed on the sides, you could here them calling each other "Babe". My partner and I were a bit stunned the first time but the DVR tells no lies.

No matter their orientation, but especially if they are straight, it's nice to see affection between men displayed as 'no big deal'.

As a gay man I fail to see what all the fuss is about. I am not from the USA so didnt see NBCs coverage but I did watch BBCs ( UK ). So they didnt mention his sexuality, nor did BBC!? Well yes they did mention other athletes spouses, but all of them? I doubt it.
As for Matthew being a role model and athlete, yes there are not a lot of openly gay athletes out there. I play sports regularly and outside of gay leagues I dont know of any openly gay atletes in my city. However while Matt may have been the only "openly" gay athlete in the games he most certainly was NOT the ONLY gay athlete. He wasnt even the only gay diver ;)
I think that people are making a bit too much of this. NBC showed Will & Grace, so hardly homophobic. If they did anything overtly homophobic then sure, hang em up by the short and curlies. But from what I can see they didnt.
As for the the idiots who posted homophobic comments on here....they are not worrying about.

An out Gay athlete who's family was able to be in Beijing through a grant from the Johnson & Johnson Athlete Family Support Program and who's family got to see him win? This would be newsworthy IMHO.

Look at it this way, they nattered on about that mindless three way romance/porn scandal between the French swimmer and her competitor and the boyfriend and SHE SUCKED -- came in LAST in the 400 and lost the other races she was in.

Why is that senile mess more acceptable to talk about than a wholesome story about a mom and a partner coming to see their loved one win an amazing gold through outstanding performance?

Ridiculous. Unless J&J is trying to hide their decent humane behavior from the bangers and fundies in Amurrica.
