Unfortunately, when the Olympics became professional rather than amateur, most of the interest for the common person was lost. While a percent of the population watches the Olympics every time, it's not like the 1980s when most people watched at least part of the events.
Part of the problem, too, is that among such professionals, the numbers for victory have all too often been a tiny fraction of a second, meaning that the first few in an event are essentially evenly matched. While only one gets gold, the idea of getting a gold because of an extended fingertip or a knee slightly forward doesn't exactly engender excitement.
The explosion of non-traditional sports doesn't help much either. I haven't heard of competitive basketweaving, but given how things have gone, it's only a matter of time...

Sad to see, GREED has hit virtually every corner of society...and now even the once proud, Olympic Games....Sure, kill off Wrestling...an ancient and honorable sport, one of the original Olympic endeavors......more viewers and commecial profits in golf, tennis and badminton...geez....When did honor die?
