Michelle Obama is not a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. And I am not certain where this "21" pearls reference comes from. I strongly suggest that you have this discussion with the ladies in your chapter of interest. They may be able to give you an explanation as to why you were not extended an invitation. Outside of credit score, there are many other factors that play a pivotol role in the decision to accept someone into this organization, or not.
As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. it disturbs me that as an organization we are looking at credit scores to determine someones worthiness towards the organization. I am all for criminal background checks but a credit check is uncalled for. It does not determine whether or not a person can pay their dues. I'm sure that if credit checks were done today on members of the organization who have been dedicated sorors who have been financial since initiation they may find many who have struggled for one reason or another and their credit rating may be low. I am disheartened that this is a way to weed out candidates who may represent our organization in a positive light and bring their talents for the betterment of the organization. The initiation fees alone are getting to a point of outrageousness. Undergraduate students are cash strapped trying to get a college education and then have to work at trying to come up with the funding to become a member of the organization only to be told that their credit score is not high enough. This is such a serious matter and we need to take a stand and stop this. There has to be a better way!

Hello,
I have the same question/concern about the credit score. I have hospital bills from a serious injury. My credit score took a serious hit. I pay all other bills on time and was able to get financed for my car and was approved for my apartment.

Are these national decisions or local decisions? I've been told both.Does the local chapter have to final say? Does the National org only provide the information, to the local chapter, or does the national org actually reject perspective members?

I am going through the same thing. My credit scores range from 600-613. I already turned in my packet, so now I am waiting. However I was told that nationals had the last say so in the candidates memberships. Unfortuately, this does not benefit us, as candidates because nationals do not know us personally, like the local chapter does. I just prayed, and asked God to allow me to not worry about it, because technically, it's out of our hands. We can only hope for the best, and pray that nationals looks at the entire person, verses just one thing. It'll be sort of a let down if I don't get in for sure. Good luck girl! Check back in, and so will I! IF we get picked, it can help others be motivated to continue working towards their dream in pursuing this wonderful organization.

I have just begun the process of attending events. One of the membership chair person told me that they complete backgrounds and credit checks. I also have friend in a grad chapter that confirmed all of this. So the question is what credit score are they looking for???? or are they looking at all your past history? what other factors are being considered for membership?

it should be illegal for AkA to look at your credit report. Their concern should be why their members drop out. They are so far from the mindset of the real founders . They are too stuck up and commercial. However they are not a powerful group of women they own nothing no banks, no mortgage co, no insurance co. They will never rule the world. If they reject you hold your head up for they are only a group of pink and green are carrying the same color bags like robots. They ate social gatherers and nothing else. Watkins and Owens in Chicago sit at their desk like Gods deciding who will be accepted.. ALpha Jappa Alpha don't define who you are. Stay strong organized your own group of distinguished women. I never wanted to be a member for they do nothing, absolutely nothing sufficient. I volunteer with organizations that help the community. AKA just want to be seemed. Look like they would be please to have young ladies joining their organization with energy and new ideas. I would never join even if it was free. They only stand out at their conventions like pink and green robots. AKA make some footprints in life and take a course in humanity. Watkins and Owens get a real God in your life so you will learn to show compassion .
Young ladies focus on your career first, AKA resources are very limited. And no they would not get a copy of Michelle Obama credit report. So they unfair, and unjust..A group of black women that are POWERLESS. Headquarters restructure your organizations and your members just might stick around longer
Hats off to the sororities that know how to do it right.

I can see the inquiry from AKA on my credit. I am waiting to hear back. My score is in the high 600's. i don't think that they are pulling scores, I think they are just looking at your credit report. I will update you once I hear back. Just so you know, this is a hard pull to your credit not a soft pull.
