Just interested if you found the answer, just curious. I too was a Helens Pizza Lover, I do know after Grand Ave, they went out of business, but a friend of Dads, ran the Helens 2 at Virginia and LeMay Ferry Rd. after that. Then he was forced to shut down over a law suit, he then owned the liquor store that went in the same place. His first name was Larry, he definitely had the recipe, thats the last I knew. That would have been about 1992. Hope that helps and I would be a fan if you find it and open up a place. That cornmeal was unusual.

I kept thinking Helen's was on the east side of Grand, just south of Miami - one block south of Gravois. The fire house is at Grand and Potomac - one block north of Gravois.
Was there some other pizzeria on Grand just south of Miami ?

I lived as a kid in South St. Louis in the mid 60's to early 70's - went to Rose Fanning - and ate Helen's pizza quite a lot. Moved to St. Louis County around the time I started High School. I have since lived in California and North Carolina and I was recently telling someone that I felt the best pizza I have ever eaten was in St. Louis. They just seem to know how to do it right

I remember Helens pizza on S. Grand and Potomic across from the firehouser. They use to throw the pizza dough in the air and what a show it was. Everybody is right , it was the best damn pizza anywhere. Brings back memories of 45 years ago sitting in the restaurant with my folks. Somebody needs to bring that pizza back.

Oh man..reading these posts brings back the smell and taste of Helen's. Nothing like ordering a sausage pizza and devouring it in no time. Never any leftovers to refrigerate. Anyone have any luck with finding the original recipe?

Omg... I remember Helen's when I was a kid. We would go and pick pizza up just about every Friday night. My brother and I loved watching them toss the dough! Wish they were still around! It was better than Imos!

I don't know. I just found this thread tonight & am disappointed that nothing surfaced. I've been craving that pizza for YEARS! I hope Helen left knowing how much her pizza was loved & missed.

My mom was a waitress at the original Helen's on Grand, then at the Hampton place, when they moved there- her name was Babe and she worked for Helen's for about 18 years, or so.
As for Helen's, Helen was the sole owner and she had three kids, and all three worked there. Her grand kids worked there, too. Along with people from my family.
I have so many stories about Helen's. I was working the day Helen lost her finger in the meat grinder! True story. They did all their own prep work on site- nothing shipped in.
I'm not exactly what sure happened to Helen's but I'm pretty sure the place closed when Helen died and so did the name. I always wondered what happened to her family. My family was close with Helen's daughter's family- we hung out with them a lot!
