Helen's was the best pizza - I found a pizza close outside Chicago but it just makes you want the real thing!!!! I would bet you could make a fortune with Helen's coming back. I would work there just to learn how to make it so my kid could taste what a real pizza should taste like.

Yes, I remember Helens Pizza, it did have a big front window so you could see the dough spinning in the air as you drove by, it was on Grand one block north of Gravois, right across the street from the firehouse.
I was in Koch Hospital at the time (1963) recovering from two broken legs, my room mate was a guy named Bill, he hung out in Helens & knew everyone there, he called one evening & talked to her, told her where he was, chatted for a while & then hung up, 45 minutes later, a delivery guy peeps in the door & says, "Bill?", he said "that's me", the guy says, "here's a pizza from Helen, she said ENJOY". I've never seen a pizza like that before, come to think of it, even after, THIS WAS AN EXTRA LARGE PIZZA, IT WEIGHED AT LEAST 7 OR 8 POUNDS, I KNOW, I HELD THE BOX WITH BOTH HANDS (had to use both hands, one hand couldn't support it PROPERLY), THIS PIZZA HAD "EVERYTHING, REPEAT, EVERYTHING" ON IT!!!, IT WAS THE BIGGEST PIZZA I'D EVER SEEN & ALSO THE HEAVIEST, BUT ALL OF THE INGREDIENTS WERE BALANCED JUST RIGHT & COOKED PERFECTLY, IT HAD ITALIAN SAUSAGE, HAMBURGER, BACON, CANADIAN BACON, HAM, PEPPERONI, ONIONS, OLIVES, MUSHROOMS, ANCHOVIES, GREEN PEPPERS, & LOTS & LOTS OF MOZZERELLA CHEESE, THE CRUST WAS UP TO THE JOB OF HOLDING THIS ALL TOGETHER WITHOUT COLLAPSING. Bill managed to eat a (1) slice, trying as hard I could, I was unable to eat more than two slices, & I had the appetite of a 22 year old at the time, YES I REMEMBER HELENS PIZZERA, EVERYTHING WAS IN PERFECT BALANCE, NO MATTER WHAT YOU GOT, BECAUSE AFTER I WAS UP & GETTING AROUND, I GOT SEVERAL MORE PIZZAS FROM THERE, ALWAYS GOOOOOOOOD!!!!! Sadly there is nothing quite like it around today, there are good pizzas out there but Helens was the very top of the heap as far as I'm concerned, yes please drag that secret receipe out of hiding & PLEASE RESURRECT IT, PLEASE!!!!!!!! |

Guess my memory must be fading.
I kept thinking Helen's was on the east side of Grand, just south of Miami - one block south of Gravois. The fire house is at Grand and Potomac - one block north of Gravois. Was there some other pizzeria on Grand just south of Miami ? Southside resident 35 plus years... |

To qsego in Cuba, Mo., at the time of Helens Pizzera, there was no White Castle, no Taco Bell, no Walgreens, it was a row of businesses all along there from Helens south around the corner going west on Gravois to the alley, a business downstairs, apartments upstairs, this is in the late 50's & early 60's
