Does anyone know if Legacy Farms Kennels in Winfield MO is a puppy mill? The owners are Katie & Josh Ritter. I am looking to get a puppy but I want to make SURE that this is NOT a puppy mill. I hope someone can help!!

In my opinion, there is a very good chance of this being true. To make sure you should ask to visit the site and see the breeding dogs. There are too many batches of dogs offered to be a natural breeding experience for the dogs.

Did you end up buying a pup from them? I am considering it, I don't think they are a puppy mill.

I now know that they are. They have multiple dog breeds available and they do not want you to come and even see the parents although they claim to have them on site. Did you end up buying one? If so, I would love to know If you were able to see the parents and visit the facility.

Please, please don't buy a puppy. There are thousands of dogs -- even young ones put to sleep every day in the United States. Check out Petfinder.com You can sometimes find puppies there. By buying a puppy, you only encourage puppymills. My husband & I adopted two purebred female Yorkies through Petfinder.com . Both of them are former breeder dogs from puppymills who were old enough that they would have been killed (sometimes thrown aside & allowed to starve to death) except through the efforts of rescue people. Yes, they were older, but they had a lot of life left in them. However, they both were a shock to me & I now am completely against puppymills. I had a dog as a child & have had other dogs, but these dogs were unlike anything I had ever encountered. As puppymill dogs (& some puppymills have hundreds of dogs so much that the dogs are never touched except to be moved from cage to cage), they truly did not know how to be dogs. They had to learn that a hand reaching toward them was a good thing. One was terrified of open spaces (including outdoors) at first. She had apparently been kept in a small cage all her life & never even seen grass before. She now loves to run through the grass as fast as her legs will go. It was nearly 5 years before she stopped being afraid that we were going to drop her (or throw her) whenever we picked her up. We always had to be sure her legs were well supported to keep her calm. It also took nearly 5 years before she started approaching people in the park when we walk her. She was terrified of strangers. It was nearly 4 years before the other dog (who weighs less than 7 lbs) stopped shrinking down & making a terrible sound in her voice when we sometimes bent down to pet her. It is apparent that this tiny little loving creature has been hit on. Her hair was cut so short when we first got her that she was almost ugly. We understood that it had to be almost shaved as her now beautiful long hair was so matted & neglected. Despite the years we have had them, they still don't like to have your face too close to them; it makes them very nervous.

I want to assure you that we love both dogs very much & they have brought us much joy. However, puppymill rescues take a great deal of patience & understanding. We have rejoiced in the first wag of a tail, the first lick of our fingers (that took nearly 3 years) & many other first steps.

Why am I telling you this? When you purchase a puppy from a pet store or someone who is fronting a puppymill, you may be getting a cute little adorable animal, but please consider the horrific conditions that puppy's mother & father endure every day. One of our dogs drank so little water when we first got her that we were worried. Her foster mother told me that she may have never had clean water available to her; that her water may have been so dirty that she drank it only when she was desperate. When you buy a puppy, you keep such horrible places in business.

I purchased a Cockapoo from the 4 years ago and she was shipped from Legacy Farms to NH. I did my research on their business practices, spoke with local authorities and found that they were in good standing with the BBB.

At the time, they only bred on a small scale compared to what would be viewed as a "mill" and all of there puppies are well socialized and have been raised in a family environment. My puppy was quite use to the regular happenings of a home and was not skittish at all.

I have recommended them to several other people. My dog is very healthy and very well loved :)

I ended up buying a Cavapoo from Legacy Farms 2 years ago. I was very sensitive about buying a puppy from a puppy mill. I did look for a rescue dog or another option for a few months, but we were looking for a specific type of dog (hypoallergenic ) and I wanted to be sure of the breeding mix. I did call Legacy's veterinarian who assured me that they have one litter at a time, the dogs are clean and well cared for and she is a responsible owner. Any issues we had I feel like she answered them honestly, not just what I wanted to hear. She was very concerned about the puppy and took great care in the shipment of him to our nearby airport in Chicago. Our dog is amazing! He is healthy and lovable. He was very well socialized and almost completely potty trained when we got him. He was a very easy to train puppy and we couldn't be happier with him. Many of her puppies get purchased by repeat owners. I would not hesitate to get another dog from her. We had a good experience and love the temperament of our dog especially with our young children.

We bought Gracie from Katie and Josh 5 years ago. We went to their place to pick up the puppy who was well feed and clean. She had received some shots already. I WILL get our next pet from them. They were very good at answering questions and in no way discouraged us from visiting the farm.
