Perhaps relevant, perhaps not, but shouldn't we take a closer look at the traffic laws in Germany, where high speed highways were invented? They put much more emphasis on deterring tail-gating than on mere speed. The TV reports seem to say the second bus driver looked away briefly. The old rule of thumb calls for a car length for every ten MPH of speed. We can't undo this tragedy, but perhaps we can prevent just one more if we ourselves watch out that we don't tailgate, and ask for better regulation by the authorities to prevent same by others.

As a school bus driver, I can tell you, having all 50 of those kid in seatbelts may or may not have helped the situation. If there was a fire because of that accident, who is going to be able to get all 50 of those kids OUT of belts that may jam because of the sudden stop? Would you rather read about 50 kids dying because they couldn't get out? The law is in place for a REASON. There may not be TIME to get out of belts.
Accidents happen. I hate to see such a thing on a day when they were supposed to be having a good time at the amusement park. It never ceases to amaze me, that its always the "bus driver" or the "truck driver" who is at fault. What about the person in the car, on the phone, doing their makeup, reading directions or yelling at someone in the backseat? Thats just as distracting as anything else.....
The ones who point fingers are usually the worst offenders.
But, thats just one school bus driver's opinion.
My prayers go out to those involved, ALL of them.

Oh, and to the comment about following distance. Yes, we are supposed to follow so many feet behind the vehicle in front of us. But, whether or not its done, thats the individual driver's issue. And, being a Missouri driver all of my life, I can tell you, if you leave room in between, 9 times out of 10, someone is going to slide in there. Inevitable. This is Missouri, remember?

As someone who was involved in marching band in high school at Houston, MO and in college at (formerly Southwest) Missouri State University, I will most definitely be praying for the families of those killed in the accident and for healing for those injured. News like this absolutely breaks my heart, even though I doubt I knew anyone involved.

I'm normally opposed to speed enforcement cameras, but this accident makes me wonder if MoDOT should install them along that stretch of I-44 and set them to go off at ANYTHING over the posted 65 MPH speed limit. In other words, if those things catch you doing 66 or more -- cha-ching!

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who is involved in this accident. Now is not the time to be pointing fingers, you need to think about the children and their families and families of all involved.

Please - if you can't be compassionate after a tragic accident, keep your comments to yourself.

Thank you for your update. This is awful! They are saying it is a SUV, and looks like a Grey color?

yes, I've always wondered why there are no seatbelts...why, in other vehicles, but not buses that transport CHILDREN???!!!!
Because in reality, they are much safer without them. One of the posts above explains it better. This has been studied many times over the years - in the long run, students are in MORE danger if they are trapped in seat belts. Buses are made to keep them more contained, versus a private vehicle such as a car, truck, SUV.

Yes it is a Gray or Silver GMC Pick up truck. They are working atm to remove the Vehicles involved in the accident. the Second bus has been moved and now they are seperating the first buss from the semi and the GMC.

I feel that the speed limit should be lowered in that area of the highway and also maybe made a longer exit to get off for Six Flags a fun day for families and children have gone bad to many times in that area. Enough accidents to do something about the layout in that area. It's a very clustered area with stuff sitting all around to look at. The speed through the 2 miles before/after Six Flags spped should drop to 50mph. Sorry to the families that have loved ones injuried and that have pasted. God bless you!!!

I teach CDL training, Almost all professionals know this rule, For ever 10mph your driving you need 1 second stopping distance, at 70 mph that would be 7 seconds, although Im my expirence school buses would struggle to maintain that speed.

Prayers for all of the families!
Perhaps now we will see a State Patrol presence on this stretch? I drive it back and forth everday, and I've only seen the SP once or twice through the whole section

The accident is west of Villa Ridge, MO, not at Gray Summit. I came home 44 from 109 in Eureka and there is no traffic back up east bound in the non-construction zone, but the HP has the highway blocked off just west of Exit 251, which is the exit for Washington.

All east bound traffic is being directed off 44 at Union and coming up Hwy AT, to come back up to 100 at Tri-County truck stop & then, get back on I-44 right there.

Of course everyone is starting to blame the driver of the truck. Everyone always blames the truck driver. 90% of the time it's not our fault. All of you motorists need to learn to respect the trucks on the road and give them space. Stop cutting them off. At 60 mph it takes 2 football fields for a loaded truck to come to a stop. It takes a car about 100 feet. The next time you get in front of one and slam on your brakes, think about that. Obviously from looking at the pictures and listening to all the reports, the bus drivers were at fault. The truck was already stopped because he was rear-ended by the suv. Stop blaming the truck drivers.
