W. Va. governor protests film 'Shelter' for using negative stereotypes - MSNBC Wire Services

Gov. Joe Manchin and others took offense Tuesday to a planned scene from an upcoming film starring Julianne Moore that stereotypes West Virginians as inbreeds.

We dertainly should!!!! We are NOT a deformed bunch of idiots! It's sad to say, however, but I'm sure some people will think it's "funny." Some people like to be under this stereotype.

They are right. They took Boss Hog from movie and they used Governor Joe Manchin corrupt politics in story plot for Boss Hog in movie The Dukes of Hazard.

We are now in the major media for Supreme Court corruption and the Gov's. daughter scam, is the scripting of deformed West Virginians much worse? We are already being laughed at!

Let them laugh. We know what and who we are. They may make stupid movies about us, but I bet they wouldn't get out of there cars to say anything like this to our faces. I live in WV, and I have ran several of the back hollows. I am sure there is inbreeding and incest as there is everywhere, but who of you have seen the sights of which the movie producers deplict?

I haven't seen any deformed inbred hillbillies, but I have seen inbreds that are slow. due to a father raping a child or an uncle raping a niece. but they are not deformed. I know this is terrible, but it does happen.

Yes, Auntkathy, it does happen every where. I have had disputes with idiots that have put us PROUD WV HILLBILLIES down. But when you bring the Bible into it and tell them we all are inbred how do you think we got here, Adam & Eve!!!!!!!! They don't realize alot. The Great flood, there was Noah, his wife and sons & their wives. How did the rest of us get here. I know there are some of you that don't believe, but there you go!!!!!!!!!!

Since moving to West Virginia from New York City in 1985, I have noticed one common thread thru West Virginia. The smart ones leave.

I am sure many of you, like me, have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly no matter where you go. There are smart and dumb people as well as hillbillies and rednecks everywhere!

In most instances, I got along with most while living out of state. However, there were some, which, once they found out where I was from, would no longer speak to me or would give me hell. I have had several intense arguments with others defending my state. Some were enlightened and learned something new, while others would not hear of the truth. It is sad. The ones that would segregate West Virginians just showed their ignorance. I could not begin to count the endless amount of people who are not even aware that WV is its own state. They would ask,“So, what part of VA are you from”. While others would automatically assume I was prejudice just because I was from WV. Others would make jokes and wise cracks. Yes, WV has its share of idiots that make the majority look bad, and carry out the bad name we have, but the majority are intelligent and good people. Most of all WV has a higher concentration of caring people than anywhere I have ever been.

Stereotyping is in every state. Look at California, plastic surgery, drunks, drug addicts, etc., Texas is known for having not so smart cowboys, remember the movie "Urban Cowboy"? Inbreeding is everywhere, New York, Florida, California, the list goes on. Every single state is made up with smart people and pure idiots.

What bothers me is how these so-called "well educated" people don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. "Hillbilly" came out of Kentucky. With the information available on the net, you would think people would be smart enough to research. Gee whiz!

Never be offended by the truth. As for why I stay in West Virginia-I have a son. He lives here with his Mother (in Ohio, right across the river) and I believe a child was born with two parents and that's how many should raise them. Not one (Unless one parent is abusive),two. However, by the number of single parents in West Virginia(Deadbeat MOMS and DADS alike abound here), I guess loving your family without having sex with them is a bizzare concept.

Then why don't you move righ on across the river? There is no more incest, or single parents here than any other place I know. I was raised by two parents, as was my grandparents, my parents, my kids, and most of my friends. A lot of single parent households are that way because that's how the parent wants it. I also don't know of but a couple cases of incest, and those are questionable so don't come with all the bull unless you can back it.
