Sticking up for us

hmmm.... 3 vague descriptions of VT State bills, that of course have no impact on nuclear energy...."neither pro, nor anti"
yeah right. 1. Require $ for plant shut down= already mandated by the fed regulatory agency. The only reason to layer on a state requirement, is so it can be used to "punish" VY later (just like the failed "bill" that would have assessed a multi-million dollar "fee" on VY). 2. Require a comprehensive vertical audit and reliability assessment of Vermont Yankee. Another item that is currently regulated and monitored by the feds. Again, the only reason for this VT audit bill is to stick it to VY when the feds won't. 3. Require the Department of Public Service and the Agency of Natural Resources to report to the Legislature with recommendations for the optimal siting within the state of a dry cask storage facility for spent nuclear fuel rods. Third bill, third layer above and beyond federal monitoring and storage requirements. So, we will have this wonderful legislation, that further complicates the utilities ability to operate efficiently and effectively. And, why did you not mention the COST of all this layering of duplicate rules and regs? We will have a Montpelier hiring boom for all the engineers and experts to feed the kooky statehouse with all the ammo they need to shut down VY. Come on, you aren't really fooling anyone, you can come out and tell us what your real agenda is...... Signed, Local Consumer, not affiliated with VY (except for my light bill, which will be MUCH higher if you have your way) |

The Vermont Senate appears to have no shame.
They seem to believe that agreements once made can be broken at will. When a company undertakes to provide a service, in this case the fundamental service of supplying to the energy infrastructure, under a given system of regulation and taxation, it is not a small thing to turn around and change that system, to impose extra layers and costs. The legislators should think about the message they are sending to other industry too. Is it "Come to Vermont, you never know where you are with us"? |
I think you already know the answer to your question. Many years ago, when I was an active anti-nuke, one of our stratagies was to drive up the cost of nuclear power, so that it could not compete. As an engineer, I knew that many of the costly changes and requirements provided no safety benefit. Now, as a contractor, I have a job working on more worthless government-mandated tasks. |

Well said Joffan, But it is more like "DON'T come to Vermont or else!!! Maybe when there is one rich guy and one evil corporation left in VT for them to milk, they will get it. This is why our youth is all leaving, unless they are unemployed. And the liberals ponder why there is a mass exodus from the Northeast, to the South and West. It is not all about the "weather". More like the anti-business/job "climate". |
