Pledge of Allegiance divides a Lamoille County school board |topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

"Pressured by a board member and local veterans to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at every meeting, the Lamoille Union High School Board stands its ground.

In a real-life version of civics class, Lamoille County residents are doing their homework on patriotism and free speech as they navigate a controversy about the Pledge of Allegiance.

This time it’s not a debate about whether students should recite the pledge. Instead, the discussion centers on whether the pledge should be repeated by adults — specifically, the members of the Lamoille Union High School Board.

So far the answer is no.

The board voted Sept. 4 (5-3) and again last week (4-3) against a motion to say the pledge at the beginning of every meeting. The second vote came as a crowd of more than 25 people, many of them veterans who carried small flags and red poppies to symbolize the sacrifice of fallen soldiers, were on hand to express support for a motion to have the board recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Longtime School Board member David Whitcomb of Eden is the general leading the pledge charge. He wants the pledge to be a ritual at meetings, and he helped rally like-minded people to come to the most recent meeting.

At that meeting, the chairman of the School Board, Steve Reber, declined Whitcomb’s request to lead the room in a recitation of the pledge. Whitcomb and others stood up and said it without him." ...

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation except for atheists, divisible, with liberty and justice for everyone but atheists."
