If they attract new, younger faculty, shouldn't the HR costs go down?(less experience means lower starting pay)

They contend that the UVA salaries for faculty do not measure up to the national average. They are proposing raises for current faculty, as well as raising the rates for new faculty. Add the cost of searches for new faculty, all of the expenses to bring candidates to UVA to include transportation, lodging, meals, and food at meetings and dinners with current faculty, plus giving them moving expenses, etc., and you're talking big bucks before they even get here.
Shame they do not feel that the staff has anything to do with the success of the students or the programs. Toss them a 2% raise every 5 years and call it done.

Not only do the routine searches pile up costs, but often UVa is trying to land the same fish that another sometimes better paying and more highly regarded school is recruiting. This often results in UVa making an offer, only for the line to go slack when the fish bites on the better offer, causing the whole wine and dine cycle to be repeated with a new recruit. And on and on it goes. Great way for profs in searching departments to get repeat free dinners at pricey area restaurants. Wonder if they ever invite staff to these ...
