Discrimination undermines competitiveness

There are 3 comments on the hamptonroads.com story from Aug 26, 2013, titled Discrimination undermines competitiveness. In it, hamptonroads.com reports that:

Should we be concerned that gay and lesbian employees of Virginia's public universities and colleges do not receive equal benefits, namely health insurance for their committed partners? Do we care if that hinders our ability to attract or retain talented faculty and staff, who opt for competitors that offer domestic partner benefits that we still do not?

Of course it does. I've already encountered academics that were deciding between job offers here in Michigan, where equality if still banned, and in New Hampshire, where equality is reality.

Guess which state they chose to relocate to??

And guess what else?? The couple I'm thinking about is STRAIGHT. But they wanted to give their talents to a place where they know that ALL their colleagues are treated fairly and equally. That's still not possible in Michigan.

Unfortunately, many don't care what the cost, as long as the law supports and enshrines their irrational prejudice.

True, but money will always eventually win out over prejudice.

And the few big businesses that cling to prejudice and hate will limit themselves out of business. Companies like Cracker Barrel are already having trouble expanding into some markets because equal rights laws in so many progressive places ban the gross civil rights violations that are printed right in their employee handbook. Meanwhile, their competitors are moving in and taking over market share. Bummer for Cracker Barrel, huh? NOT!
