OMG... that doesn't surprise me one bit. I used to hide my CW McCall tape in the overhead just in case they wanted to sneak a peek in the cab :)

I hear ya. I've still got a lot of miles to go before I retire. You know, I got to thinking about our group conversation on this thread today and I'm really surprised that the state doesn't require regular license holders to take a knowledge test every other renewal or so. There are several laws that have changed and a lot of stuff people need to be reminded of. The two biggest things that I see where folks don't understand the law or the rules of the road concern school buses and on ramps.

If you have a four lane divided highway that is divided with a turning lane, a concrete barrier or grass, etc., then you don't stop for a school bus coming the other direction when it puts its red lights on. If 4 lanes are divided by a double yellow line, then you have to stop. The penalty for blowing by a school bus is so severe, though, that most folks are just too scared to go by even if they know they are in the right where the law is concerned. I've witnessed many accidents involving school bus red lights and, when I see one coming from the other direction, I automatically back off and give myself more than enough room to stop just in case.

On ramps are another story. Highway traffic is supposed to maintain their speed and the person getting onto the interstate is supposed to adjust their speed to merge with traffic. Cars on the interstate are not obligated to move over or slow down to let you in. The reason this bugs me to no end is this- I'm driving my tractor-trailer down the highway and someone is on the on ramp preparing to merge. If I move over a lane to let them on, then I have to get back over in the lane I was in after the merge is complete. The problem comes in several varieties, but the two that scare the bejezus out of me are when the car that has merged either stays beside me in my blind spot or slowly passes me on the right. If I stay in the left lane too long, then chances are someone is going to come around me on the right and I might not see them and merge over on top of them. If I hadn't moved over to begin with and just maintained my speed, then the person trying to merge may end up doing something unsafe in the merge process or I get the finger as they fly around me and my manager gets a phone call that says a driver in tractor number such-and-such just ran someone off the road. It's a no-win either way you go.

Unfortunately, people don't know what courtesy is, and if they do, they don't practise it on the highway. When I am on an on ramp, I "find a hole" then accelerate till I'm in the "hole" before I enter the traffic. That way, so one has to slow down, or pull over. A lot of truckers so pull over, out of courtesy, and I appreciat that. When I see traffic trying to merge from an on ramp, I will pull over, unless I'm blocked, then I accelerate so I'll be out of the way when the merging traffic gets to the highway.

People don't realise, that truck is just as difficult to get going as it is to stop, and too many approach ramps are too short for you to accelerate to proper speed.

My wife and I both try to accomodate truckers, because we know the problems you have with cars. The cases I stated earlier on in the thread are, probably, isolated cases. It is just that I know the weight difference in the vehicles, and what happens if I am hit. It usually takes forceps to remove the person from the car! I've seen a lot of "balls of steel" that were once cars. I don't want to be in one of them.:-)

Yes the wreck turned out for the worse, but accidents do happen. this guy is a good guy and didn't mean for this all to happen im sure he fells very bad , I work with him. But yes i fell he needs to be taken out of his truck for awhile or maybe for good. when you are driving an 18 wheeler you need to be on your horse at all times.

I agree that there are a great deal of irresponsible drivers in "4-wheelers" cutting off truckers, however, that simply was not the case in this situation. Here we had drivers sitting in traffic and then BOOM!!, they were hit by a truck driver who was driving carelessly. He had a mile to slow down and did not. Besides, don't truckers get the inside scoops on any traffic jams with those nice handy little radios? The blame here lies solely on the shoulders of the trucker and DOT.
So you think that because the interstate was made for 18 wheelers that you have the right to run people off the road, take drugs to stay awake, lie on your logbooks, injure & kill innocent people just because? Well I got news for you buddy. One of the people who think like you have cost a 15 month old his life and his family greif. And have almost cost another family 4 of their family. You need to grow up and dont think it wont happen to you, Mr Perfect Driver.

Well well well, looks like we have a northern hound trying to rack up some points down here! And to top it off, he is from Bloomington IL hah. Let me remind that Bloomington idiot that in the winter time, everytime I drive up in Illinoi especially around Peoria, I see more 4 wheeled cars on the side from lack of ice and snow driving skills in a 3 mile section than I see down here on any given full day of driving! Before you criticise truckers, know where you stand first.

Since we have 4 wheelers complaining about truckers, here is one of mine to boot!

who: Woman mid 20's
Make: Toyota
Model: Sienna
Color: Beige
License plate: NC XXE6998
Time: 3:05 pm
Location: I 40 East bound between exit 49 and 53
What they did: She nearly caused an accident! She was so impatient she thought she could out pace three cars so she could barely squeeze over from hitting the 18 wheeler she came up behind on and it was kind of entertaining to see her tires smoke from hard braking to avoid rear-ending the truck. I was the 2nd vehicle in line and she even tried to maneuver right in front of me. On top of that she then got right behind me by cutting right in front of the car behind me. She tailgated myself until I passed the 18 wheeler. Then, she cut me off by cutting to the right lane before she gave me a chance to change lanes. Then the car in front of me scooted over in front of her in which she then had to slam on her brakes again from hitting it as she tried a 2nd time to cut right in front of me. After passing both her and the other vehicle, she then got right back behind me and tailgated again.
The fact that she had children in her van even shocked me some more that she would drive that way. Its sad that her children does not have a mother who drives safely.

So.... there is a perfect example of everyday typical 4 wheelers driving the roads. And yet we have people bashing truckers all of the time! In fact, I will go ahead and post new ones every day that I can just to show how much more dangerous 4 wheelers are

I know where I stand at Mission Hospital for the last 2 weeks with my family member who was injured in this accident one of your "GOOD BUDDIES" caused because his computer was more important than paying attention to the road. Still not sure if they will survive and you got the right to tell me how I need to feel and what I can & can not say about you stupid jerks who think you own the road. So dont tell me what I do and dont know, I know I may still lose someone in my immediate famliy. So take your opinion and stick it up your !%$!!! You take your pills to stay awake and lie on your log books so you can get the extra dollar without any concern for the 4 wheelers on the road or for that matter any drivers reguardless of what they drive. Its smarta@@'s like you who give the good drivers a bad rep.

You make me sick!!! A 15 month old child lost his life. His parents will never watch him grow up, graduate form high school or college, get married, have kids none of the things that you get to do with your kids, if you have any. And all you care about is the bad rap this driver is getting and that it makes the rest of you look bad. Boy you are pitiful soul.
