I just heard on fox 13 that Gary will not be vetoing the new tax on tobacco. He also said there is no tax increase on fuel or any other thing that EVERYBODY in the state would purchase. Instead he is letting the smokers, who has one of the smallest populations in this state, carry the burdon of funding the schools short falls. It seems to me that in this mostly "mormon" populated state where they preach to have large families the burdon should fall on them. Most families have 5-6 children in the schools at any given time, I have one, yet I pay the same amount of property tax as they do. There large families are consuming more of the schools resources than mine are. Not to mention those that have NO children in the schools. And now because I smoke I will be taxed AGAIN. I did not get to vote on this. Where are my rights? This goes far beyond just raising taxes to help the state. It is pure DISCRIMINATION!!!! I honestly feel my rights are being violated.
This state treats smokers as if they are the scum of the earth. And now we are to fund the schools. Instead of putting a small tax on say milk or something everybody purchases, where it would not be felt so hard in the pocket book, you will put a HEAVY burden on one small sector that has the LEAST to do with the problem.
I will no longer try to be courteous of my habit in public. If I am funding the states shortfalls then I want to be treated with respect!!!
I will purchase my tobacco in another state as often as I can. I will also encourage others to do the same.
I am tired of hearing " I don't care where the money goes I just want people to quit smoking"
If we all did who would carry the burdon?

Utah's Governor surely "waivers" a lot! Utah needs a DECISIVE Governor. Of course, it will never happen that someone outside of the Mormans (misspelling on purpose - think about it) will be elected.

I would not have a problem if they raised the sales tax 1/2% it would hardly be felt by the consumer but would generate a huge amount of revenue for the schools. Something everyone is concerned with, and everybody would be helping. but to put the burden on one sector of the population is just wrong and the impact will be felt on my pocketbook!

The old saying that these Moronic, ALLEGED representatives use " For the Children" boils me no end. The tax on tobacco products is as unconsionable a tax as these idots have come up with for decades. Let the breeders pay for the children that they make and tax the Moron church $1.00 every time any one walks in the door of a church or temple. FOR THE CHILDREN! Governor Herbert is a useless, gutless Moron!!!
Hey Utah live within your means I DO!

I do not smoke but the anti smoking people are unbearable, they're disgusting. Utah is the little brother of California and tries to duplicate their laws. They lack in mental capabilities in the Utah government.
Governor Herbert should be replaced in the next election.
The crime rate will rise dramatically if they raise tobacco taxes much higher. If a criminal don't have the money to buy smokes the will steal items to sell to gain money to buy them. Perhaps they may even highjack supply trucks.

I used to think that this tax was no big deal. Then i did some research and really thought about it, and I agree. If people choose to smoke, which is legal, then why should they pay for my kids? The things this government is coming up with!

they're just doing it to tax the non-mormons, It'll be a cold day in hell when they tax something that they use.

Your totally right. It will create crime, and more robberies, etc.

I really don't think Huntsman would have done this. He stood up for the gays and I think it is sad that we lost him. He looked out for everyone not just the church!

I think we could get a governor that would think that way again.
