Utah firing squad executes convicted killer

Full story: The York Daily Record

A death row inmate who had used a gun to fatally shoot two men suffered the same fate Friday morning as he was executed by a team of marksmen -- the first time Utah used the firing squad to carry out a death sentence in 14 years.

Man I love stories like this!! Makes my freakin day.

"A barrage of bullets tore into Ronnie Lee's Gardner's chest where a target was pinned over his heart. Two minutes later an ashen Gardner, blood pooling in his dark blue jumpsuit, was pronounced dead at 12:17 a.m."

Too bad he could only go through it once.

Finally... justice for the victims. Make the punishment fit the crime! Maybe criminals will think twice about their actions.

5 marksmen, 4 bullets from 30-caliber Winchester rifles into the chest over the heart, should not have taken two minutes to die. Time to refine the marksman skills.....

That said he got what he deserved....

Give it time, the bleeding hearts will come out of the woodwork saying he didn't deserve this. I say, let the punishment fit the crime, he had it coming.

It DIDN'T take two minutes for him to die they waited two minutes to check for his vitals.

Two minutes to die is just about 36 hours too short. The firing squad should have been armed with nail-guns and sling-shots.

Damn good the firing squad was not made up of a certain group of York, PA citizens...the guy would still be alive, shot in the lower leg and a$$!
"Murdering the murderer doesn't create justice or settle any score," said Rev. Tom Goldsmith of the First Unitarian Church". Yea, but it sure keep their a$$ from returning to the streets! Good riddance!

I do not think that they should had shot this man so many times. Two times should had been enough.

They use 5 rifles. one is loaded with a blank. None of the riflemen know who has the blank. They use that many shots to make sure it is quick. one person can miss very unlikely all 4 will miss.

the movement after the shots were all reflexes. 4 .30 rounds into the heart does the job pretty quick.

Ok, so the fact he was executed doesn't bother you, it's the WAY he was executed that has inspired your eloquent words??

Did he have a regard for the manner in which he killed the officer? Does the rapist think about the psychological effects of their victim? Does the juvenile sex offender think about the physical and mental anguish of that dear child? Does the drug slinger think about the addiction and toll that the user may face? Criminals don't think about their victims; they think about only themselves and their self satisfaction.
That is the exact problem with this nations legal system; we have been too nice to criminals. Perhaps if we incorporated public executions and did away with "soft and humane" executions, crime rates would plummet almost overnight.

I hate the fact they gave him a 'choice'. They should have asked him, and then done the opposite! Pumped him full of lethal drugs. heheh
