Utah does not require an applicant for a permit to carry a concealed weapon to demonstrate he can fire a gun safely.

Laws which make concealed carry of firearms illegal are already an infringement of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution.(As are any laws which restrict firearm ownership).

Anyone who can legally own a gun can already open carry the firearm UNconcealed with no training or license whatsoever.

Making an argument comparing licensing concealed carry to driver's licenses is ridiculous. The percentage of people killed by LICENSED motor vehicle drivers so far exceeds the percentage of people harmed by firearms, whether the owner has a concealed carry permit or not, as to make even the suggestion of similarity ludicrous.

Owning a gun, and the associated sports involved, are among the safest activities in the United States.

The following from the United Sportsmen of Florida:

"When comparing the number of firearm accidents to other accidents, 57 times more Americans die in motor vehicle accidents, 30 times more die from poisoning, 25 times more die from falls, 7 times more die from choking and suffocation, 5 times more from drowning, 4 times more from fires, and 3 times more from medical "misadventures" and environmental factors respectively."

Citing information from the National Safety Council's Injury Facts 2008 Edition, as well as the International Hunter Education Association, the fact sheet reveals that only 2 people per 100,000 are injured while enjoying the sport of hunting, compared to 2,585 who are injured while playing football, 1,984 basketball players, 1,349 bicycle riders, 1,332 soccer players, 1,296 skateboarders and 1,122 baseball players (all per 100,000).

More people go hunting each year (14,600,000) than play soccer (14,000,000), and yet the numbers prove that hunting is overwhelmingly more safe than soccer in terms of injuries sustained by participants. In fact, of the 23 sports examined, including everything from billiards to cheer leading, only hunting enjoyed injuries of less than ten per 100,000.(Injury numbers include only injuries treated in hospital emergency room facilities.)"

I do have trouble with those who adhere to an extremist interpretation of the meaning of a document addressing general principles of liberty while based on the specific conditions of the time.

Accusing another poster of upholding jared loughner as their poster boy?Go take a long hard look in the mirror, this will show you what a real extremist looks like.I also personally challenge you to show exactly where in the constitution it states it was meant only for the "specific conditions of its time".You cannot and you know it.What would the constitution be worth if left open to changeable interpretations by programable socialist elitists such as yourself?

dope said socialist elitist LOL.

Join a well-regulated state militia, bring along your musket, since the states don't have standing armies. Have at it. And don't you dare try to quarter soldiers in my house.

So you stand behind this nonsense: Laws which make concealed carry of firearms illegal are already an infringement of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution.(As are any laws which restrict firearm ownership).

Even for jared?

So the use of computers to spout your extremist views (above) isn't covered by the 1st Amendment?

After all, in the "specific conditions of the time" the only way to make your views know was to hand-print a pamphlet, a la Thomas Paine, or to stand in a public place and yell.

Why didn't they insert expiration expiration dates ? And where is the "extremist" clause ? Do you consider "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" to be extreme ?

About what time period did the 2nd amendment expire ? Was it after the South seceded, or just prior to Hitler's gestapo rounding up disarmed Jews in the Warsaw ghettos ? Kent State ? LA riots ?

So which other rights would you eliminate after a nut kills a few people ? The 3rd amendment ? I'll tell Obama he can house elements of the 82nd Airborne in your home. It would be so patriotic of you.

he is just another nut with a gun. Perhaps much more like you than me, assuming you feel put upon because there are other people who feel differently.

I suppose your point is that nuts should not only have access to guns, but should be able to buy an arsenal and carry them anywhere.

I disagree.

others seem to be confused. I don't think the bill of rights have an expiration date, I think that the principle remains intact without the extremism that pervades the discussion on this issue and that doesn't recognize the particular context where the right was spelled out.
