Media disconnect on abortion
#1 Jul 20, 2013
Abortion supporters tried to pretend there was a reinvigoration of their cause in Texas, but the facts tell a different story about America's resounding repudiation of late-term abortions.
"... Most of the coverage failed to mention an important detail: The vast majority of Americans dont come close to sharing Wendy Daviss support for late-term abortion. Numerous polls find that most Americans oppose abortion after 20 weeks, except in rare circumstances, such as when the mothers life is at risk (a circumstance for which the Texas law makes an exception). A University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll found that 62 percent of Texas voters supported the abortion measure.
"The most recent Gallup Poll on late-term abortion found that just 27 percent of Americans support allowing abortion after 12 weeks, including just 14 percent after 24 weeks.
"The point is this: As much as abortion advocates and some journalists desire to make Davis a heroine of womens rights, the fact is that the country is deeply divided over abortion, though it overwhelmingly opposes the types of abortions Davis was filibustering to save. Unfortunately, most Americans dont realize how much of an outlier Davis is."
