I personally have been under the belief that if your boss tells you to do something, you either do it or start looking for another job. Now changing their names might be a little to far, but I totally understand the need to speak english. This is America right? And last time I looked it was an English speaking country right? So if you're that upset about a owner of a business telling you to speak English, then maybe it is time to look for a new job. Good luck with that!

Upon coming to America, immigrants of past felt the need to learn the English language BEFORE trying to find a job.

Did you NOT read the article? That MINNESOTA schools were teaching students in German? NOT ENGLISH? During the wave of immigration that brought our grandparents here? Kind of gets rid of the theory that they all wanted to learn ONLY English.

And I highly doubt that they learned English BEFORE working, if everyone in town spoke German, or Polish, or Norweigan, they didn't have to learn it to work either. They had their own churches, social clubs, restaurants, etc, that spoke English AND their native language.

"My grandparents had to learn it" is a played out phrase that is used AFTER THE FACT to knock today's immigrants. Just remember, people hated your grandparents too, nobody like Irish or Italians or germans when they first came here either.

Giving someone a ticket for not speaking english is not right!!! Not speaking english is NOT against the law point blank. What the guy did at the hotel was just ridiculous. If had hired on a new crew with those "rules" he would have been discrimintating. He knew what he was doing. He is a racist just trying to sugar coat things. United States of America is the land of the free...didn't everyone immigrate here???

Hey, this is America...

Where big corporations are allowed to send jobs overseas to non-english speaking countries for cheaper labor costs and bigger profits; AND receive tax breaks in return.

Where you operate a large kosher meat packing facility that makes good money, but wait, how can I increase my profits...hmmm... I know, I can hire illegal immigrants that barely know the language and pay them far less, but I'll need to fudge their documents first.

And now a motel owner, who gave these immigrants a job, asks them to learn the language to better his customer service for his business and he is chastized??

You know what Rueben, instead of defending your heritage and ridiculing these people in this story. Maybe go after companies like 3M and Travelers for sending jobs to China and India, or after Obama for his poor decisions as of late (he is doing things he criticized Bush for). If reporters such as yourself took a good look at what is happening to America through off shoring jobs and ingnorance in the government at all levels, America would NOT be in the shape it is now.

Ruben should go back to Mexico where he came from.

Mexico discriminates against U.S. citizens in many ways, incl;uding denying them the right to own land in many areas of the country.

Ruben likes his dual citizenship -- he gets to trash Americans in both Mexico and the U.S.

Is this guy serious? Of course people should be expected to speak english! What is the problem? If people want to live in this country, then they should be proactive and learn the language.

So then it is the responsibility of American CITIZENS to bear the burden of people who refuse to speak english? These people are a burden to the system and too often take advantage of many resources. Learn the language and have a better quality of life here. What about the people that come here from the Ukraine and China? They learn the language. Why is it that spanish speaking people seem to think they are the exception all the time? If you're so unhappy Ruben, you are always free to go to a country that speaks all spanish. Get over yourself.

Reuben must be running out of trumped up racist events to write about in the Twin Cites. Instead of writing about a white person hiring a legal immigrant and becoming friends he would rather promote his own racist ideas. This guy is hurting every immigrant by lumping them with the illelgal cheats and portraying them as victims.

So you think people aren't accountable to our laws if they are so lazy they won't learn the language. Please. You break the law you take your medicine. Not learning the common language is a ridiculous excuse. Working in corrections, I understand all too well people will actually fake not knowing english as a means to buck the system.
I don't know of any other country so willing to cater to Americans. Stop the pity party and learn the language.

Well I can tell you with absolute conviction that we should not hold people accountable to non-existent laws. That is the issue here, not a common language. I believe everyone can agree that cops should not arbitrarily enforce fictitious laws. If you wish to live in a police state, I hear North Korea is quite nice this time of year

Although I agree with you, you do need to learn that English needs to be capitalized.

As has been mentioned, you really need to practic what you preach. Let me try to clean up your writing for you.

Hey, that's a great idea! They should know some English. Hey Franken, instead of worring about what the pilots are doing, why don't you get a bill passed which states that everyone should learn English in this county? Communication, what a great idea!

----------

Not perfect, but much better than your drivel.

Is it really necessary to parse the comments for spelling and grammatical errors? This isn't exactly a dissertation for a doctorate degree

Daily Horoscope for December 3

Pisces

Although its just the start of December, you still need to get your skates on if you want to be ready for the forthcoming festivities. If you've barely made a dent in your preparations, relax, sit down and start writing out your list of what needs to be done. The Moon's in intuitive Cancer, so take it easy for a while and have some romantic fun. You can instruct your subconscious to take up the load, and things will look easier in the morning.
