39% of lung donations from smokers

More than one in three lung transplants in the last three years have been from donors who smoked, Health Minister Earl Howe has disclosed.
In a written reply, Lord Howe said that between April 2009 and 2012, 39% of lung transplants were from donors “with a past history of smoking”.

He said all lungs were carefully evaluated to ensure a donated organ does not go to waste if “clinically viable” and there is someone who could benefit.

Due to a shortage of organs, the patient’s probability of survival is greater if lungs from smokers are accepted than if they were declined.

Lord Howe said specialist nurses in organ donation evaluate the donor’s smoking history and pass this to the transplant team to make a clinical decision on whether to accept the organ.

He said the Government was constantly seeking to raise awareness of organ donation and encourage people to add their names to the NHS organ donor register.

Confederate and the rest of you desperate souls that cling on for all its worth...no one cares...your fabricated and possibly non fabricated crap means nothing...no one could give a hoot what documentation, research or data you can provide. It simply does not change for one second, the invasive, rude, and selfish nature of smoking and the vile contaminated (or not) exhaust of said smoker.

This is a human issue, this is a real issue, this is a issue of civility...smokers have and continue to believe that because it was ok 20 or 30 years ago, that it is ok now...guess what change has happened, and will continue to happen. In fact...change right now, is at its slowest speed it will ever be, you better get a handle on that smokers!

Anyone for a second who believed or still believes that smoking ever had a chance of coming back into popularity from the dead any time in the present, near or future time frame...is effing nutz!
Like snuff, spittoons, and Sarsaparilla...smoking too has gone the way of the dinosaur!

You people ignorantly hanging onto the past, only show your age, foolishness or lack of adaptability into a every changing/growing society!

Bottom line...smoking stinks!

Dead on. Its called PROGRESS. Its called waking the fk up and realizing cigarettes are a poisonous product that NEVER should been sold or used. These smoking Neanderthals refuse to think, or change and will die from this product. My father died from smoking, a friend has a hole in his throat and many friends never made 50 before they died.
