Supporters of immigration reform today announced plans for a march through downtown Dallas, one they hope will evoke memories of the massive demonstration that took place in the streets of the city in 2006.

The May 1 march will seek to rally support for congressional passage of "a comprehensive, sensible, and feasible immigration bill," said Dallas lawyer Domingo Garcia, an organizer of the event.

“Our immigrant community is in dire need of immigration reform," said Garcia, a former Dallas City Council member and former state representative.

"We need to enable them to be full contributors to our economy. America must live up to its religious and moral values.”

At a news conference at Dallas City Hall, Garcia said he didn't expect a crowd nearly as big as the one that gathered downtown four years ago to march in support of immigrants' rights. That rally -- with an estimated 350,000 to 500,000 participants -- was believed to have been the largest civil rights demonstration in the city's history.

Garcia said he thought next month's march might draw 100,000 people. Like the march four years ago, it will begin at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the Catholic cathedral at Ross Avenue and Pearl Street.

The organizers have launched a Web site, www.megamarch.com .

Garcia, a Democrat, commended President Barack Obama's call for an overhaul of federal immigration laws. A bipartisan coalition of senators and House members has been working to forge a consensus on immigration reform. But few in Washington expect a bill to be passed this year, particularly with the November midterm elections looming.

Last month, the immigration bill was all but pronounced dead by U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. He is one of the Republicans who's been willing to meet with Obama and the Democrats to discuss the issue.

But the bitterly partisan congressional battle over health care reform, Graham said, will "pretty much kill any chance of immigration reform passing the Senate this year.”

Brad Watson of WFAA-TV contributed to this report.

A MESSAGE OF HOPE for those who worry about humanity's current chaotic state:

There is an enlightened World Teacher named Maitreya - the one awaited by Christians as Christ - who is now emerging into the public, giving interviews (as an ordinary man concerned about the modern day problems) on major news networks.

He calls for sharing and cooperation among nations as the only way to international peace, trust and sustainability. This includes a crash program to help all the millions literally starving to death in a world of abundant food and resources.

It is predicted that in the future, once we begin to transform our society and truly implement justice and freedom, people will be free to travel in and out of countries without passports at all. What we need is balance and the elimination of the need for people to be so desperate that they have to leave their home country to find enough work to live. But we have to learn to accept diversity here at home, too.

An entirely new civilization is in the works right now. People are demanding their rights, basic human rights, like never before on a wide scale. Food, shelter, healthcare, and education for all citizens is the only rational 21st century framework that can lead to harmany and right living for all people.

We don't even need a new law but enforce the ones we already have you don't want illegals in this country:1. Don't give any help for free (medicaid, WIC, etc) to people who can probe they are in this country legally 2.Apply HUGE fines to employers who employee illegals 3.Secure the borders properly don't just send 2 or 3 agents to sit on their butt and watch for hours...more technology...etc then you don't even need to come up with stupid laws that create so much confusion...I'm mexican but legally living here since always I was never illegal but it gets to a point when I sometimes feel like illegals have way more rights than the legal people who pays taxes and does the right thing, I know a woman whose name is Alma and her mom from Juarez came her and deliver here for free, and she did exactly the same thing with her kids (she has 3 and plans to have a 4th one)..so they are all legal but abuse the system taking advantage of programs that my husband who is an AMERICAN CITIZEN can't apply to get even though his taxes pay for it she gets medicaid for her 3 kids, WIC AND ALL KINDS OF STIMULUS FROM THE GOVERMENT...she even got a new SUV when she just laughs and watches the other people struggle...Thats just my opinion!

CNN,com deputy shot in Arizona,,, their socialist or Hispanic, sensors will not post it.
They have also turned off my ability to read other comments.
First steps towards socialism and communism.

History Lesson: facts

How many of you remember the 2 Texas border patrol officers thrown IN JAIL FOR SEVERAL YEARS for doing their job. They shot, a well-known Mexican criminal drug runner in the ass.

The federal government said they violated his rights. So the federal government gave him permission a Mexican criminal illegal to cross into the United States Whenever he wanted to.
The 2 board patrol officers went to federal prison. HMMM

History Lesson: facts

National Park Service Park Ranger, there has been several border patrol officers, sheriff deputies, several U.S. Ranchers, and just regular U.S. citizens shot or killed by illegal Mexicans.

It is not just Arizona five other states. California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico there has been.. HUNDREDS.. of Americans killed by illegal Mexicans.

The federal government does nothing about it.

In the federal government wants to give these illegal Mexicans amnesty citizenship and rights. WHY ?

If AMNESTY and RIGHTS is granted to Mexican illegals,,, Regular US-born Mexicans will not be safe in their own country, THE FUTURE they will be fair game, to all the things that goes on in Mexico.

What would happen if regular US citizens were to going into Mexico and kill Mexican citizens, what would happen?

Stripe, I never said anything about "god". This is very practical message, about a group of highly intelligent men who have mastered the physical, emotional and mental arenas of life and are here to inspire us to create a more sane and peaceful civilization.

Many Christians unfortunately have a mis-understanding of the nature of Jesus of Nazareth. He was not "God", the creator of all. He was one of us, a man from the human race, only he was quite a bit further along the evolutionary path and had important things to teach at his level of wisdom. Just like Buddha worked through the Prince Guatama 600 yrs earlier and became known as "Guatama Buddha", Maitreya, the Christ, worked through him (his disciple, Jesus) during the last three years of his life. Hence the name Jesus Christ.

But now Maitreya is returning physically himself, into the open, along with a group of his Masters of Wisdom. The many miracles and signs (including the "star-like luminary" now appearing all over the world since Dec 2008) are but one aspect of this gradual emergence since 1977.

Look for a man calling for a new way to live together. Do we really think everything is going along wonderfully without help right now - oil disasters, pollution of all kinds, the potential for a major nuclear war, distrust and tension among nations and peoples....?

Only when the basics for everyone is met will we have a chance at justice. And only when there is justice can there be peace in this world. This is what Maitreya will talk about at the beginning.

I read with interest Mr Garcia wants America to live up to their moral and Christian beliefs.
And if a Mexican citizen comes and steals a Social security card, then should they expect no reaction to that ?
I don't think reform will work our for all.
