God Speed Nancy: A Tribute to Nancy "Woman" Benoit (Wife of Chris Benoit)
Please understand I am not here to discuss the tragic events that ended the life of Chris Benoit and his family. I believe in the grieving process. I also believe waiting for the dust to settle to pass judgment on a case of this nature. So no, this is not about the recent tragic events in the life of a family, this is a tribute to Nancy Benoit whom I knew personally, though in the casual way that we know an acquaintance. Still I knew her and she is woven into the fabric my youth, and as such I would like the time to reflect on the girl I once knew.
Once upon a time, I remember going to the Eddie Graham Sports Stadium and watching wrestling with my Dad and brothers. My Dad has since passed away and I look back now at these memories with fondness. The Eddie Graham Sports Stadium was the heart of wrestling in Central Florida back when I was growing up here in the late seventies and eighties. Following wrestling like I did then, I would always buy a wrestling program and read up on the wrestling news of the day, and get familiar with the wrestling line up for the night's event. During that time I remember meeting a girl who was working the wrestling three as a sales girl for the wrestling program called the Grapevine. Her name was Nancy. Nancy was my age (around 18 or 19 when I first met her) and to be honest, she was the best looking girl I had ever seen. I remember that I would go buy a wrestling program from her just to get a chance to talk to her and get to know her a bit better. Given my shyness at the time, this wasn't an easy task, but Nancy was always a pleasant girl, she was kind, funny and full of life and instead of giving up the quest, I pressed on.
Unfortunatly, I was not the only one whose eyes she caught back then; it wasn't long until she caught the attention of one of the stars of wrestling, Kevin Sullivan. Nancy soon became a part of the show, working as part of Sullivan's act, which of course made it almost impossible to talk to her, unless I did something totally stupid like jumping into the ring. Soon Nancy went from local sales girl to being on TV and I briefly followed her career from time to time. She went on to become a manager of some wrestlers and took on the stage name of "Woman." Later she married Kevin Sullivan, and though I cursed the man, I really thought that they ended up living happily ever after together. I gave up on wrestling after the WWE took over all of wrestling, it was no longer the mom and pop organization that I had grown up with, and the new glossy look did not appeal to me. As I lost interest in wresting I totally forgot about Nancy, that is until yesterday, June 26th 2007. As I was reading about Chris Benoit I learned that he married a former wrestling manager with the stage name of "Woman" and it was Nancy that he is alleged to have murdered. My mind drifted back to a time when I met her selling the wresting programs. It saddens me to think that such a beautiful person met such a tragic death. God speed Nancy Benoit, I will always remember you.

You should throw out all the wrestling toys, since you seem to be banning wrestling from your home now.

You needed something like this to happen to realize that small children probably should not be watching the steroid laden strip show that the WWE has become?????

My boys ages 5 and 9 watch wrestling all the time and have over 50+ wrestler toys. We are THROWING OUT of of their Chris Benoit wrestlers today!! My five year old asked me twice already why would he kill his family? Why did he hurt his son? I was almost in tears trying to explain this cowards actions to my son. How could you take the life of your own flesh and blood? My heart goes out to his wife's family and the children he left behind. Wrestling will be curtailed in my home from now on.

Sucks how everything went down and I doubt he realized what he did to his family until after the fact he was coming out of it. Now I don't condone it what so ever but steroids and a mix of medicines does cause hallucinations, depression, severe rage and all you people claiming it isn't enough to kill a child do some research and you will find some pretty interesting things. Of course what benoit did should tell people he couldn't live with him self after he realized what happen and he isn't the the first wrestler to fall in this respect so all ya'll saying he shouldn't be respected for his ability in the ring. Maybe not respect him for what he did but he his ability in the ring deserves recognition and respect. I have seen guys beat their children and girlfriends due to roid rage yet not even recall doing it till after the fact so don't assume they are capable of making cohearant decisions or that they are seeing their family. They don't and I have learned by experience what roid rage can do.

Ummm, ok, where does one begin. First of all, the kids that are alive are probably grateful that it wasn't their weekend to visit their dad, or there would likely be a higher body count. Second, suicide is the ultimate selfish cowardly act. You can try to glorify it by saying how much it must have taken for him to do it, but what it comes down to is that he took his own life so he would not have to face the consequences of his actions. I do not limit consequences to legal action, I include remorse and guilt, facing the other loved ones of your victims. If his actions were drug induced and he "came to" to see what he did, a real man would face up to it. And C)- I'll skip what he did to his wife, but I defy you to defend this cowardly animal after you put yourself in that little boy's place for the last few moments of his life. Close your eyes and imagine being this little boy when his daddy, that he loved and adored, came into the room and reached down and covered his head with plastic. Imagine kicking and thrashing and struggling for breath as the man that is supposed to protect you holds you down hard, probably with litte effort on his part. Imagine grasping at his rock hard muscular arms to try and push him away and you can't get him to even budge a millimeter. Imagine the confusion and terror that the little boy went through dying at the hands of his "loving" father.
Is this "bashing" the murderer? And yes, when you strangle and suffocate 2 people, you are a murderer. Committing suicide after you commit double homicide does not waive your crime.
AMEN!

I can't help thinking about the little boy-the people that are defending or trying to defend this sick monster should try to think about what the boy went through. I am accused of "bashing" Benoit! If that's what anyone wants to call it-whatever. He should have killed himself and ONLY himself. Your post was right on the money.

SOMETHINGS JUST DON'T ADD UP. CHRIS KILLED HIS WIFE AND SON. STAYED IN THE HOUSE AND THEN KILLED HIMSELF. THE BODIES FOUND IN DIFFERENT ROOMS. STRANGE TEXT MESSAGES FROM CHRIS.OKAY I'M NOT SAYING IT'S NOT POSSIBLE. LET'S LOOK AT IT ANOTHER WAY.SOMEONE ELSE IN THE HOME POSSIBLIE HOLDING THEM HOSTAGE, OR GOT TO CHRIS WIFE AND SON FIRST AND THEN HIM . SAY THEY HELD THEM ALL HOSTAGE FOR WHAT EVER REASON PEOPLE DO STRANGE THINGS WHEN IT COMES TO STARS. THE ONLY WAY TO GET CHRIS DO WHAT THEY ASKED WAS TO SEPERATE THEM. WITH OUT HIM KNOWING THEY KILLED HIS WIFE AND SON. NOW THEY GOT WHAT EVER THEY WANTED AND HAD NO USE FOR HIM. HANGING YOURSELF WITH A WEIGHT MACHINE COME ON.IF THIS TRUE IT'S TERRIBLE I'M JUST SAYING LET'S LOOK ELSE WHERE ALSO SO THAT A POSSIBLE KILLER ISN'T RUNNING FREE AND TRASHING A FAMILY THAT HAS ALREADY SUFFERED. I WORK FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT LET US NOT GET TUNNEL VISION ON WHATS RIGHT IN FRONT OFF YOU LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE. GO BACK TO THE BASICS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING. I'VE WATCHED WRESTLING FOR OVER 30 YEARS. I KNOW IT'S FAKE JUST A SHOW AND WRESTLERS ARE JUST PEOPLE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. SOME PEOPLE TAKE THINGS LIKE WRESTLING VERY PERSONAL.IT WOULDN'T BE THE FIRST TIME A CRAZIED FAN GOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO HURT A STAR. I JUST FEEL THINGS DON'T ADD UP. I KNOW THAT I DON'T HAVE ALL THE EVIDENCE. WHAT I DO KNOW IS THINGS DON'T ALWAYS LOOK THE WAY THEY ARE.
Quite true that could be a possiblity as you said we dont have all the evidence, only Chris Benoit was a by far a well built guy with a whole lot of muscle mass it seems to me that if that had occured there would have been some signs of even a slight struggle weather the assaliants had weapons or not I would have put up a serious fight to save my family and myself. But I do see where I it's not out of the relm of possibility because you being somone in law enforcment and myself going into law enforcment with in the next year I've been taught that the truth I usually stranger than fiction
