Firstly, any American can legally change their name to nearly anything they want, at any time, for any reason, REGARDLESS if the name change is due to a marriage or not.

Secondly, the U.S. Constitution's "Full Faith and Credit" clause REQUIRES that ALL the acts of ALL the states be legally recognized in ALL states, their own marriage laws notwithstanding. Otherwise CHAOS results.

Tennessee is doing this ONLY out of bigotry, and they will lose a federal court case over this.

My fiancee and myself legally changed our surnames years ago. And when my fiancee went to the local New York State DMV to have her name changed on her driver's license a second time, AND have her gender changed on her driver's license as well, the NYSDMV simply changed that information on the license, no questions asked, nor proof required.

So now we have a legal real name and a legal Tennessee name
.
We're married under our real name; but single under our Tennessee name
.
Billy the Kid can murder 21 people in New Mexico; then run to Tennessee to be Daniel Boone who never killed anyone
.
Tennessee will never get it straightened out

The federal courts will order Tennessee to legally recognize the person's legal name. Tennessee officials are doing this simply out of bigotry, and they are violating the U.S. constitution, something they SWORE to uphold when they took their oath of office.

I wonder if they aren't doing it for the publicity? And I also wonder if there is a government official anywhere who hasn't violated the US Constitution they swore to uphold. If there are it is probably a shorter list than those who kept their oath to obey it.

Government is supposed to protect the rights of the minority from being violated by the whim of the majority, not cater to the bigotry of the majority which is usually the case.

Hyphenated names are stupid and obviously impracticable, which is why they are seldom used.

EXAMPLE:
John Jones marries Sally Smith, and change their surname to "Jones-Smith"

Gary Greene marries Betty Browne, and change their surname to "Greene-Browne"

John Jones-Smith and Sally Jones-Smith have a son they name James.

Gary Greene-Browne and Betty Greene-Browne have a daughter they name Gail.

Twenty years go by and James Jones-Smith falls in love with Gail Greene-Browne, and they marry.

Is their surname, and those of their children, now going to be "Jones-Smith-Greene-Brown e" ?!

OBVIOUSLY IMPRACTICABLE which is why people seldom create hyphenated names.

Really.....many Gay and Lesbian married couples hyphenate their last names together.......in my wife's case, when she married me.......she took on my last name which by the way is hyphenated!!!!

Try NOT putting your head up your azz when you make an asinine comment, okay?

I said "seldom", not "never".

It's still stupid (like Democrats, liberals, Catholics, and Wisconsin Synod Lutherans).

Look who's sounding in from a country where prostitutes are legal and advertise in windows. I'm sure your mom look cute in her little frilly outfit, trying to entice customers.

Hey, little liar, great fake name and fake home country! Keep up the lies, we have a drinking game where we take a drink every time you lie. It gets us real drunk real fast since you lie so often.

Tennessee isn't the only state doing this, Texas does it as well as other states that do not have equal marriage laws, it is perfectly legal for them to do so.

The only reason why the government will change it is because President Obama ordered it, you could change your name before DOMA was partly struck down. The government only has to recognize marriages from residents where the marriage is legal, civil union is not a marriage and don't get the same recognition nor does domestic partnerships. The only way these states have to change your name by marriage is if DOMA is struck down in it's entirety and marriage is nation wide.

The battles have been won, the war still wages on. Right now your same sex marriage is only legal in the states that recognize it and to the government if you LIVE in one of those states, that's it. If you drive across a state border your no longer married and the state does not have to treat you as if you are. If your in an accident you can be denied access to your spouse because your not married in that state so we have to fight on!

I agree.

But in the states where we have achieved marriage equality, and since we have also now achieved equal tax treatment under the law by the federal government, and in the states that have granted us marriage equality, we HAVE achieved 100% equality in those states.

Wouldn't you agree ?

You don't bet tax equality unless you live in one of the 13 states, the government will recognize tax equality (practice not law) in other states only if that state will allow it. You have to file the same way in state as you do with federal so you have to file single no matter what.

When will these idiots realize that the more slam-dunk lawsuits their stupidity hands us, the quicker we'll end up getting an all-encompassing ruling from the Supreme Court?? They're just going to pile up more wins for our side that will be used against them over and over.

They're like two-year-olds throwing temper tantrums. They're just screaming and yelling and acting like fools. I guess because they are.
