A road worker who lost his left leg in a bizarre accident has lost it again - this time because his fake limb fell off in midair while he was skydiving.
"How many people do you know who lost the same leg twice?" asked Scott Listemann, 47, of Poughkeepsie, with a chuckle.
Listemann, a disabled municipal road worker, has posted "lost" signs near the spot where the pricey prosthetic fell off during a jump about a month ago at a skydiving ranch in upstate Gardiner. So far, no one has responded.
"It's a $12,000 leg," Listemann said. "I'm hoping someone finds it."
In the meantime, Listemann is limping around on crutches. His insurance company has footed the bill for a new leg, and it should arrive within a few weeks.
"I'm going to make sure I don't lose it," he said. "I can't afford to lose another one."
Listemann has gone skydiving as a hobby for years and often jumps with a group of friends at the Blue Sky Ranch in Gardiner, which is about 90 minutes north of the city.
He says the accident took place last month after he jumped out the plane and pulled the cord to open his parachute.
One minute his prosthetic was there - the next moment it wasn't.
"I looked down, and it was gone," he said. "I have no idea when it came off."
Listemann said he believes sweat from his stump may have caused the device to slip off. He had jumped before without incident, but notes that he had always worn a special boot that prevented the prosthetic from falling off.
He landed safely and immediately started brainstorming about how to find the missing leg. He believes it could be in the Wallkill River or somewhere on the ranch, but he said he knows it would be a long shot for anyone to find it now.
"More than likely it's in the woods somewhere," he said.
"I thought he was pulling my leg at first," said Bernadette New, 31, a skydiving instructor at the ranch. "He's very positive about everything. I don't know if I would take it so well."
Listemann, who is single, lost his leg below the knee when a dump truck ran over his foot in November.
He does his best to make light of his injury and freely admits that his buddies are razzing him about losing his leg in midair.
"They're laughing at it," Listemann said. "I've got people saying I'm an inspiration. And this is just another part of it."
Listemann said he has gone skydiving since losing the false leg and has no plans to stop.
Although his hobby costs plenty, he said hopping out of planes is an exhilarating thrill.
"The friends, the fun, the addiction," he explained. "If you've been, you would understand."
Oh, and if you're wondering how he lands on one foot - he doesn't. He slides in on his side.
I do hope he finds it...
