Pennsylvania Government

Our view: Sunday hunting ban should not be repealed

Full story: Public Opinion

Our nation is vastly different from what it was 200 years ago. Our formerly agrarian nature first turned industrial, and then technological, as the slow march of time wrought its changes on our society.

This letter is a joke, make a trip out west, Sunday Hunting is permittted, the national forest are utilized more by the local residents then the state forests in Pennsylvania ever are.
I have personally been hunting on Ski slopes while the local were riding horses, hunting national forest having the local residents walking their dogs.
Mr. Major do you hunt?, Do you understand a hunter passion? Do you work 7 to 3 in a factory with mandantory overtime on Saturday?
Some other questions lurk, Why is permitted the state to tell a property owner he can not hunt on his property a particular day of the week.
How many non-hunter on average are shot in Pennsylvania each year. How many non hunters are shot in the US each year while enjoying the outdoors.
Please stop your liberal agenda, let Pennsylvania do what the majority of the country already does.
By not hunting Sundays, this is a deterrent to non-residents to come enjoy our beautiful state, they must stay in hotel room an extra day without the enjoyment of what they are here to do.
Hunter are not Vilans like your opinion is trying to create, sure there are hunting accidents, but in relation to car accidents they are very light, Put 1 million people in cars in the state see if there is more than a handfull of accidents. It is human nature.
Mr. Major why dont you came out with your real liberal agenda, tell us we dont need our guns, that is what you want, take hunting away , then all by the way you no longer need them so we will just take them.
If this is the opinion of the "PUBLIC OPINION" , I call for the hunters and the hunting relating organizations to bycott your newspaper.

Yeah, it's nice to go outside on Sunday and not have to worry about some drunken hunter wanting to shoot off his gun.

6 days a week of hunting is ENOUGH...if you STILL can't kill a deer in a solid week, then you suck or are in an area with low game population.

That's great, if anybody can understand what "bycott" is.

OH, you mean "boycott"...I guess all that hunting diminished your education.

In rifle season, our little hollow is polluted with hunters, and on Saturdays you hear rifles from sunup to beyond sundown. I work during the week so I'm not home to hear it, but hubby says there are few weekdays that he doesn't also hear gunfire, but he tends to hunt during the week because there's not as many people out there. My job is pretty stressful, and I appreciate having one day of quiet during my weekend.

I happen to agree with most his points, I work 6 days aweek and my only free day is Sunday, I can not do what I enjoy doing this time of year.

To all opponents to Sunday hunts.......are 4 days out of the year(2 in the fall and 2 in the spring)during "gun" hunts really going to make a difference to your peace and quiet? Game numbers have skyrocketed and the number of hunters has declined. The few people that do hunt would love the extra day to pursue their passion....as previously stated most people work all week and quite a few work saturday too. But wait, maybe it's the disturbing sound of a silent arrow during the six weeks of archery in PA that is disturbing you quiet time. We all know how disturbing a sunday archery hunt would be to your poor little ears.

One thing that aggravates me is hunters who use fully automatic firearms to hunt with. Lately I've been hearing shots behind my property that sound more like Uzi's than deer rifles.

Yes, and the fact that hunters get to use tanks and artillery to protect themselves has become quite ridiculous.

PA doesn't even permit semi-automatic rifles. If someone is hunting with an automatic rifle, then they are doing it illegally and make up about 0.01% of the hunting population

For once I agree with you but your have all the wrong reasons for not wanting hunting on Sunday. You do know that is the one day we are to rest. It is also a great day to worship the Lord corporately.

You obviously haven't been on these boards for long. Yes I use a name that implies that I am a male, but I am ALL WOMAN.

Yep. There's lots of game nearby. I'm looking at a bunch of does right this moment. Wouldn't you like to know where I live? Not gonna tell you because the bucks have already disappered (probably due to the poachers) and I want to save some for my freezer.

I don't hunt, but I appreciate it when hubby brings home some deer - nothing like a good venison roast or fried tenderloin!

I'd just like a single day of quiet out of each week. Except for the guys who are laid off (and can therefore hunt Monday - Friday), most hunters get two days a week to hunt. My rationale is based on a compromise with those folks who can only hunt on weekends - they get one day to hunt and make all the noise they want, and I get one (shorter) day of not having to wear safety orange when I'm at the back of my property and also having quiet. I think that's fair.

George, please know that I respect your opinion...however, Isn't rifle season only 2 weeks. Unless of course you count archery, in that case hunting is 6 weeks. That would be only 6 sundays. My husband works hard all week including Saturdays. I see no problem with him going out Sunday morning before church to hunt.

Does he get a chance to clean the blood off his hands before going to church?

If something is weighing on your mind it will start to affect your health, Virgo. It might make you feel tired or depressed, or it could dominate your thoughts. You know what you should do about it, of course, but it seems like too much effort or you want to pretend that it doesn't exist.
