Candid much of the information on saturated fats in relation to the disease processes can be explored by looking up the macrobiotic diet for cancer patients.

Shark caplets have also been studied in relation to disease process and fighting of lung cancer.

I would use more of the search links such as ask jeeves vs google which only seems to keep the what's the latest fad type information.

Thanks wescott,I appreciate your efforts and advice.(this is my third post to thank you,hope this one hasn't also gone off into space !!!) What I was looking for is more Info. on how certain oils affect the alveoli. My understanding is that certain highly polyunsaturated fatty acids from vegetables,made the aveoli waste away or at least greatly weaken them.(Please don't anyone quote me on this as I'm not sure of it myself) Thanks again for any help on this.

It's known that about 20/24% of heavy the smokers will become victims of COPD in there lifetime. COPD is the 4th leading cause of death in the US, and I belive several other countries as well. We know that about 80% of people with COPD were/ are heavy smokers.We also know that certain genetic factors may cause about 18/20 % of COPDs. It's quite obvious that smoking plays a major role but there must be some other factor involved, otherwise all smokers would someday have advanced COPD. I'm more than open to anyones Ideas.

COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. When you say 5% of all deaths (in the US ) that would include non smokers as well as smokers.If you are a hard core smoker you have a 20% chance of death from COPD. To me that is no small blip. Given that smoking causes many more deaths from heart disease and lung cancer it becomes outlandish to call it,***<"only a blip" ***.. Chances are that one of the posters on this forum who smokes will suffer and die from COPD.

Wow, don't worry about dying from COPD or an accident or the flu because they're insignificant. Tell that to the families of the tens of thousands who die from these causes each year.

Well, well, well... If it isn't the humanitarian Just Candid throwing out more trash. Sorry, to be late, but, I just found this thread... did you miss me, by any chance? Obviously so, you brought up my name. I will make sure to spread the news that you are also missing the others...can't let you be lonely, can we?

My chances of dying from COPD are quite small, but, thank you for your concern. As, stated repeatedly, one of the LARGE factors to this disease is genetic..such as bronchitis, allergies, etc, that have a huge impact on the lungs. Sorry to inform you, but, I come from extremely healthy stock... that isn't an issue. I do not live in an over polluted city, such as LA, which non smoker breathe in the equivilant of 4 packs of cig. a day. I do not live a sedentary life style, ranching is not condusive to that. I do not work in a place where I must breath chemicals. I am not prone to stress, such as brought about by sticking my nose in everybody elses business, and, believing I know what is best for the world. And, I am not over weight, I eat very healthy. I do not drink alcohol. H'mmm, I would say over all, I have a good chance of out living you, with no problem.

But, again, I thank you for your deep concern.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Freshly minted GOP White House hopeful Fred Thompson puzzled Iowans yesterday by insisting an Al Qaeda smoking ban was one reason freedom-loving Iraqis bolted to the U.S. side.

"They said,'You gotta quit smoking,'" Thompson explained to a questioner asking about progress in Iraq during a town hall-style meeting.

Thompson said the smoking ban and terror tactics Al Qaeda used to oppress women and intimidate local leaders pushed tribes in western Anbar Province to support U.S. troops.

Smoking offers sign of progress in Iraq

ZAIDON, Iraq — For Iraqis, smoking is a social tradition. If one were to walk down the streets of any Iraqi village one would see Iraqis talking, drinking tea and smoking. And when an American is offered a cigarette from an Iraqi, it symbolizes an extension of friendship.
However, the Zaidon, Radwaniyah Corridor, located just southwest of Baghdad, has been smoke-free for nearly two years due to the overwhelming presence of al Qaeda living and operating in the area.
Recently, concerned Iraqi citizens have been coming forward to meet with Soldiers of 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, in hopes of ousting al Qaeda and their restrictive policies.
“The terrorists living in the area were not allowing Iraqis to smoke, listen to music or even drink soda. Iraqi women were also being raped in the name of Jihad,” said Capt. Rod Robert, 1-89 Cavalry assistant operations officer.“Basically, the terrorists were taking power from the Iraqis, so concerned citizens joined together and decided to rid the area of al Qaeda.”

On the evening of the 24th I spoke with a local Iraqi official, Colonel Faik, who said the Muftis would order the severance of the two fingers used to hold a cigarette for any Iraqis caught smoking. Other reports, from here in Diyala and also in Anbar, allege that smokers are murdered by AQI. Most Iraqis smoke and this particular prohibition appeared to have earned the ire of many locals. After an American unit cleared an apartment complex on the 23rd, LTC Smiley, the battalion commander, reported that residents didn’t ask for food and water, but cigarettes. In other parts of Baqubah, people have been celebrating the routing of AQI by lighting up and smoking cigarettes.
