Methadone Can Kill Even at Therapeutic Levels

There are 21 comments on the About.com story from Jan 14, 2008, titled Methadone Can Kill Even at Therapeutic Levels. In it, About.com reports that:

“The unexpectedly high proportion of otherwise unexplained sudden deaths in the therapeutic methadone group points to a significant contribution of this drug toward the occurrence of sudden cardiac death among these patients”

Methadone, a drug used primarily for drug addiction withdrawal and chronic pain relief, can cause sudden cardiac death even when it is not overdosed, but is taken at normal therapeutic levels. via About.com

The makers of the drug have know changed the drugs description and use. I saved the old ones and my last new one. I will not use this drug for pain control again. Once again we trust these Companies and are their testing grounds. The law suits will fly as we find out more information on the new published warnings that I did not know. I wonder why they withhold information that is vital for making a decison. MONEY

Can you please be more specific?
What are you talking about when you say that they have hidden anything from us?? The study was published in the January 2008 issue of The American Journal of Medicine. They just came out with it!
And what are you also talking about when you said that they changed the description and use??
Please specify.

Can somebody please tell me why I am just sitting there sometimes and it is like my brain just goes to sleep really quick and I jerk. It's not the same as nodding off, I do plenty of that, it is different. Does anybody know what I am talking about and what the heck is this? It can't be a good thing. I have been on methadone for 3 years. I am now at 90 mg a day. I am tired of being hot most of the time and I have gained so much weight!! Why? I really don't eat that much!Do they put something in methadone that makes you gain weight? Anybody have any answers for me, please?????????

Don't increase your dose, it is too high if you are nodding already.

Wendy that happened to me before I started having full blown seizures. I would not recommend anything about changing your dose at this time, I would seek out a neurologist as soon as possible. Let him know you are on methadone,so he doesn't give you anti seizure medication which will cause an even worse reaction, mine was able to give me small doses of klonpin just for the seizures, and recommended I get off the methadone as soon as possible. Weight gain is a side effect of methadone.

Let's face it Rel, it was never meant to be a pain medication, that was the drug companies idea to sell it to more than just drug addicts. It may alter your perception of pain, but it certainly doesn't treat it.

Alabama. Investigates Methadone Treatment Clinic

Following the death of a 24-year-old University of Montevallo student from methadone, Alabama authorities have asked for an investigation into the clinic providing the treatment, the Mobile Register reported Aug. 13.

Last fall, Richard Mitchell Shrum died from methadone intoxication just three days after starting his methadone treatment for his addiction to narcotic painkillers.

His death had led the Alabama state Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, which oversees addiction-treatment clinics in Alabama, to begin an inquiry into the Gulf Coast Treatment Center Inc. Alabama health officials said they received several other complaints about the methadone clinic.

In addition, the Alabama state Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation has asked the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to assist in the review.

"It's more of an examination than an investigation," said John Ziegler, spokesman for the mental health department. "Our internal investigative unit is not involved."

Addiction experts in Alabama said the probe is long overdue. Calling the system poorly regulated, addiction experts said the treatment network puts people in for-profit clinics that provide methadone without properly screening the clients for other dangerous drugs.

"These methadone clinics are all about profit," said Dr. Christopher Jenkins, a psychiatrist who operates Recovery Medical of Mobile, Alabama.

Alabama state officials said the probe could be expanded to include other deaths related to methadone clinics throughout the state of Alabama.

"We are receiving an increasing number of complaints regarding the amount of methadone that is available on the streets, consumer complaints about take-home restrictions, pain management clinics, applications for new clinics, and numerous deaths reportedly related to overdose of methadone," said Kathy Sawyer, Alabama mental health department commissioner.

It Doesn't surprise me 1 bit this came from Alabama, My sister in law works for the ASMMR which oversees our clinics, these things are not going to change much. As my sister in law said , they may inspect the clinics, slap their hand, come back for a follow up and keep on going. This has given this poor state a lot of revenue off the backs of drug addicts who most people could care less about. The real crime is this stuff will continue to flood the streets until enough deaths occur before there will be any change in the law. Great research Vini. What a damn shame.

In addition, the methadone clinics here start everyone at the same dose, 35mg. a little high for someone who might think they have a little drug problem with lortab or someone just wanting a kick. Well 35 mg knocked this 180lb man on his ass, and had it none been for my wife, I most certainly gone into respiratory arrest my first night. I had little experience using pain medication, then you may up your dose every day for the first 30 days. Is it that way in other states? then it's pretty much whenever you, your counselor, or the medical director wants to bump you up. My medical director always said, don't listen to everyone else keep your dose up. Thanks a lot Doc

I'm not a mother, but I am a dad, and there are a lot of mothers on here, I know its not the same but you can talk to me or anyone else you want to anytime. I missed out on a lot when I got on methadone 4 years ago. I have 2 grown boys and a 9 year old, and now that I'm not on methadone we have a beautiful relationship, we just had a nice walk together and talked about his day, I couldn't do that a month ago, and now I have found true happiness with my children. They are our gifts, as you are a gift.

melissa, I posted to you on the other site but know this, you are not alone, there are many going thru the exact same thing you are. How old are you? I would be happy to speak with you anytime. In the mean time know this, you cannot control what your mother does, has ever done or will do in the future. It is not your fault and the only one that can work on your Mom is your Mom. I can tell you are a sweetheart. Dont let yourself go in the process. Take care of you sweetie. Love, Mary

Richard Mitchell Died, I say at the hands of others. Three days after he passed the tox report came back to the clinic that he had no narcotics in his system. Had they waited they would have never started him on the meds. He was 24 years old and wanted to get a degree in counseling for the deaf. Also, he wanted to move to Canada where people like him were not viewed as criminals. When the clinic was approached to make a comment, they referred to him as,'one of those people'. Like he did not matter because he did drugs. Yes he did, and he was a drug abuser to the full extent of the meaning, but he was a still a person who was trying to get clean. Had they asked him if he was having issues with staying awake, they would have realized he was being overdosed, & they would have stopped. Bottom line, the clinics are about money. When the medical team looks down on the person they are helping, it makes for insanity
