Sounds like these BG school administrators need to take a clue. There's a big difference between rules meant to "cut down on distractions" and enforcement methods that do nothing more than curb personal expression. Does this young woman's hair style prevent fellow students from learning? Call me kooky, but I've never experienced that. Props to her parents for supporting her right to be an individual.

A mohawk with liberty spikes - probably worth sending a kid home to wash the gel out.
Red HIGHLIGHTS? C'mon, people. This is silly. Get back to educating this girl, because apparently she needs it. Red is so 2001.

her red hair highlights were a distraction? hhmmm wait til she finishes going through puberty and see what a distraction she is to the boys. Probably should expell her permanently. this is so shocking - how can students concentrate and learn with red hair highlights reflecting in their faces?

Listen...if some red highlights prevent children in Bowling Green from learning because this hair color poses a "distaction"....thes e Bowling Green students are in a HEAP of trouble. I mean seriously, if these kids cant tune out some RED HIGHLIGHTS, how are they supposed to function in life?! Life is FULL of distractions, and 1/2 of what you do each day is learn to tune out distractions. These administrators are setting these kids up for failure. Its sad really. UPDATE: ITS NOT 1955 ANYMORE, THE BEAV AND WALLY ARE DEAD

I'm not sure what to think about this article... it is just highlights... however, if they let one, they have to let all. first it's red, then blue, then black, blue, green, purple yadda yadda.

Although it is just highlights, I COMPLETELY DISAGREE with the parents "supporting" their daughters highlights. It is teaching her to have NO RESPECT for authority and to do as she so chooses, regardless of the consequences. That highlights are more important than her education.

Oh yeah, and every school I've ever gone to has had rules that hair must be NATURAL IN COLOR. What's so hard about that? Kids can do crazy things in the summer!

Hmmm, well it sounds like the young lady's parents think hair colorin' is more important than her gettin' an education. Good of them to decide to home school her instead of puttin' up with them silly rules at the school.

I wonder, since they seem to want to ignore those rules, do they allow their daughter to smoke, do drugs, have sex, rob elderly folks at the mall, etc. What's a couple more silly rules to break.

I do think kids need uniforms. Also these kids need to focus on getting an education not coloring their hair. There are way too many distractions in school these days.In 20 years from now the color of their hair wont be paying the bills their education will. All schools should enforce the dress codes and not back down.

Rules are rules. The parents should make her change her hair back. It is late in the year and the girl is not stupid - she knew the rules of the school. Its not about red highlights, its about following rules that you are given. If the school is allowing other students to have highlighted hair, they should also have the same punishment. She couldn't have waited a few more weeks until school was out?

Teaching her "no respect for authority", you say?--sounds like they are teaching her the right way of thinking as opposed to becoming just another sheeple.

Its red highlights, chicken little. Because she has highlights doesnt mean shes going to go out and get stoned and rob elderly people. The fact that she wants back in school to LEARN illustrates this. The parents of the girl want her back in school. Times have changed there, guy. This int a black and white movie era that were in anymore. People have mohawks, people have piercings in their tongue and men dress like women. We all may not agree with it, but we have to deal with it in our everyday lives. Do we need some decency in school as far as dress codes are concerned? Sure. Should RED HIGHLIGHTS be grounds for suspension? Blatently not. My issue here isnt with the disrespect of school authority here. My issue here is with school administrators who are out of touch with reality who are trying to enforce bans on things that are in fact normal and quite common. This isnt about hair color and distractions, this is about a insecure administrator with a unrealistic view of the world who wishes it was 1955. Well, I would fire this administrator because its painfully obvious to me that this person cannot help groom this child to grow and adapt in this diverse and ecclectic society we live in today. ITS RED HIGHLIGHTS!!

Oh, so you're allowed strange hair color and piercings and slutty clothes at your workplace?

She has the rest of her life to dye her hair whatever color she so chooses... until then, she needs to be at school doing whatever it takes to get an education

Schools have rules. They have dress codes. They should be followed. Without seeing a picture, none of us can really make a good judgment on whether her hair is a distraction.

What's silly is, summer vacation is two or three weeks away. Why doesn't she just change it back and then dye it the day summer vacation starts? Controversy averted.

stick to the issue - slutty clothes arent at issue here. i work in an office and women have highlights in their hair and men and women have tatoos (and some slutty clothes)
