Inspector General: Canton troopers cheated on exam

COLUMBUS: An Ohio Inspector General report says state troopers assigned to the Highway Patrol's Canton post cheated on yearly exams required for law enforcement officers who give breathalyzer tests.

That doesn’t say a lot about their character if they have to cheat to pass the test. This is why I think some of the comments on this site about officers always being right disturb me so. Some people are so blinded thinking officer of the law are stand up citizens when a lot of them aren’t any better than the criminals they are sworn to protect us against.

I would think that one result of this would be to negate charges and convictions of any persons who tested by these troopers for driving while impaired. Does anyone know if that will be so? Thanks.

The biggest damage, IMHO, is to the issue of credibility. All LEOs are supposed to be held in high esteem with regard to their testimony at criminal trials. Every time a story like this comes out, it increases that little bit of doubt - so that if I'm chosen to sit on a jury, I'll think twice about taking what a LEO says on the witness stand at face value. At least without a good bit of corroborating evidence. If a LEO is willing to cheat on a required exam, tell me why he/she wouldn't lie on the witness stand to secure a conviction? Unfortunately, they don't wear signs that say 'Good Cop' or 'Bad Cop', so the notch of trust in the profession gets knocked down one step further.
