Days after she was dismissed as principal of St. Benedict School in Eggertsville, Molly Halady has agreed to a contract with the school to return to her post, the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo has announced.

The decision to retain Halady followed a meeting Sunday among Halady, the pastor of St. Benedict Church and the diocese's secretary of Catholic education, a session held in response to the outpouring of concern from some parents of children enrolled at the school.

The Rev. Joseph Porpiglia, St. Benedict's pastor, announced that Halady will return as the school's principal in an email sent Monday to parents, one day after The Buffalo News reported on the parental reaction to Halady's dismissal.

"We now ask that we join together and focus our energies on a renewed commitment to creating a strong Catholic community committed to spiritual growth and academic excellence," Porpiglia said in the email, a copy of which was provided to The News by diocesan officials.

Halady has served for three years as principal of St. Benedict School. In a statement to parents Thursday, the parish said Halady was leaving the school to "pursue other options."

But in an email to parents one day later, Halady said she was dismissed by the parish because she objected to some of the terms in her new contract and, therefore, refused to sign the agreement. She denied being insubordinate and vowed to fight to win back her job.

Concerned parents discussed Halady's departure by phone and email, and several proposed holding protests outside St. Benedict Church on Sunday.

The diocese urged parents not to hold the public protests and, while declining to discuss the personnel matter with The News, agreed to hold the meeting among Halady, Porpiglia and Carol Kostyniak, the diocesan education official.

A diocesan spokesman declined to comment further, and Halady could not be reached Monday. Classes for kindergarten through eighth grade begin Wednesday.

The matter has been settled.

No need to get your panties in a knot.
Must every employment arrangement be made public?

No, to the best of my knowledge, never. That includes Head and Mansell, too. It would have helped the situation, had they done so and let it be known that they had done so.

This is just a common contract dispute.....No need to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

Nice try, Kevin!

No it is not.......the point is the priest L I E D and announced she had left to pursue other interests. That was not true and it fits the mode of the Diocese of Buffalo. They lie a lot! Also, the Secretary for Education seemed to openly fear a media event and did what she could to curtail it. Today is the final day for the superintendent who has resigned her post on the first day of school. Quite interesting to see people jumping ship for job security as the new man takes over the Bishop's office.

And how common is it for a Catholic School principal to be fired days before the first day of school? I believe most people would agree that it is none too common.

Yes Art, you were always impressed with your writing and would use the word excellent to describe your perceived strengths. It is a shame you didn't work on more issues while away. Bishop Grosz said you walked out of treatment. What happened? Did they bring up Ryzard? Or did they bring up your family and how bad you were treated by Big Art? Now that Tim Russert is gone maybe you could use that excellent writing style and become an author. "Big Art and Me" could be a top seller. Tell how your daddy drove you out of the house and into the priesthood and close the book with how daddy led you to jump in the sack with Ryzard.

Will it be a 60s style eucharist where beer and pizza are consecrated instead of bread and wine. Wait till Rome hears about this.

It all happened because the pastor is not interested in the school and wants to get rid of it.

Now he is blaming some Sister Mary Sean at the diocese because she told him to do it and say what he did. He is upset at Mrs. Kostiniak for not supporting him on some things. The principal is quite happy that the record has been set straight. All the attention will keep him on his toes the next time he wants to play games with her. We'll be watching you Father Joe.
