New York To Take Up Marriage Equality In Wake Of Maine Vote

Full story: lezgetreal.com

On 5 November, Governor David Paterson of New York called for a new session of the New York State Legislature in order to resolve unfinished business that faces the state. Of course, the easiest way to resolve the state’s formidable budget crisis would be to divide the state into New York City and Upstate New York (maybe call the new state Albany), of course, this has been suggested dozens of times in the last century. Among the items on the agenda will be marriage equality.

Do NOT put it before the people to vote on. Do NOT allow a referendum to define it. Do NOT allow a vote to veto it.

These are basic civil rights. This is about equality. This is about humanity. This is about freedom, and THAT is about the United States!!!

Those who seek to deny any class of people in this country the same rights that they, themselves enjoy are un-American.

I’m in agreement with this marriage equality thing. I think men should have the rights women do when it comes to getting custody of the kids. Why do the women always get them? Everyone knows men are better parents.

I've seen talk in editorials of banning such referenda where basic human rights are concerned -- WASHINGTON, DC has this provision already -- but this needs to be done nationwide, yeah.

What kind of sick country do we live? Know what it reminds me of? IRAQ and IRAN and countries like that. It's just unconscionable.

Now you get it....so why does the gay community get away with denying the rights of heterosexuals to maintain the sacred union of marriage between a man and woman.....hypocrites.

Just read the article. Yeah, the representatives in New York feel a *DEFINITE, DEFINITE* duty to New York City, where there's a huge gay population.

I've been on New-York-centric boards where this issue is discussed, and they speak their damn minds if anyone does. There is often savage, four-letter-word-laden back-and-forth between the "christians" and the pro-gay people, and they say *EXACTLY* what they think of each other.

I am glad that the article *specifically* mentions that some of them don't give a shit what happened in Maine. The one guy even make Mainers sound like idiots, which is unfortunate but there is no way you can say it's entirely undeserved. Maine f***ed up, basically. That's basically what happened, let's all face it and move on to this next opportunity.

Yes, I get it. You, however, don't.

Can you, as a heterosexual, get married? Yes.
Can a homosexual get married? No.
Do you, as a heterosexual, deny a homosexual the right to enjoy that same freedom that you enjoy? Yes.
You are denying freedoms in the United States. You are un-American and should be treated as nothing more than such. Someone who hates freedom. A traitor to this nation.

I whole-heartedly agree. The "religious right" (Religious Reich) is nothing more than the Taliban in the United States. Interestingly enough, they are of the same Abrahamic philosophical background.

You are correct, and have put the other poster in his place. My guess is that he will not admit it, because they never do. They wallow in their own vomit and filth and refuse to be sensible.

Yeah, I'm getting majorly harsh with them. I'm starting to become *deeply offended from a faith perspective* by their complete, unadulterated evil, and will treat them like the vomit-spewing demons that they are.

Referendums are absurd when it comes to civil rights like marriage. In Maine a difference of 3% separated keeping the civil rights of same sex couples intact, v. stripping them of those rights.
There are almost 53,000 queer-identified people in Maine per census data. 3% of the population of Maine is only about 39,000 voters. That means a minority of those who voted stripped away the rights of 53,000 fellow citizens. 39,000 vs. 53,000 citizens. That ain't just wrong, that's seriously f***** up.

I can't marry a member of the same sex either......we are treated equally! Deal with it......

Because first of all......HETEROSEXUALS DON'T OWN THE WORD MARRIAGE.

Marriage is a legal contract between 2 people and granted rights, benefits and privileges by the states and the federal government.

Oh and secondly.......IF MARRIAGE WAS A TRULY SACRED UNION BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN.......then why is there DIVORCE AND ADULTERY.

The only one's being HYPOCRITES.......ARE HETEROSEXUALS.......and not all.......just those who refuse to acknowledge the rights of Gay and Lesbian American Citizens.

“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination”(Leviticus 18:22; see also Leviticus 20:13).

Disobedience of such a clear command indicates rejection of God's authority.

It's funny that they are all jumping up and down......yet there was only 32,023 votes different between the yes and the no position.

I hardly think that is a huge difference.

You just don't understand the Bible, do you? You must not have the Holy Spirit within you.

This is about temple prostitution. If you would read the previous chapters and verses and the following chapters and verses, this might become clear. You, of course, would rather pick and choose your Scripture. I'm not Christian, and even *I* understand that you can't do that. If you are to follow the tenets of your faith, you must follow them ALL or NOT at all.

Congratulations. You just proved that you're a lying hypocrite - the type of person that Jesus would look upon and say, "Get thee behind me, Satan!"

Do you want to? No? Well, what about those who do?

You're a bigot. You're a liar. You're stripping freedoms from other Americans based upon your own bigotry.

This makes you un-American.

This makes you a traitor to this nation.

Deal with it!

It's beyond effed up.

It's proudly stripping away the rights and freedoms of citizens of this nation.

It's treason.

Daily Horoscope for January 4

Taurus

If your goals are fairly modest in the short term, they are achievable and you're likely to get some praise for achievements along the way. If you aim too high too quickly, others might not take you seriously or think you're being uppity and you could come unstuck. It's all a question of attitude and approach. There are contradictory influences over the next ten days but there could also be good luck coming your way.
