We need to demand gm labeling.

"Genetic engineering is inherently dangerous, because it greatly expands the scope for horizontal gene transfer and recombination, precisely the processes that create new viruses and bacteria that cause disease epidemics, and trigger cancer in cells." - Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

Genetically Modified Food Labels

In America, there’s no need for labeling and this has resulted in a largely uninformed populace that is ingesting “gene-altered” food.

In other parts of the world such as the European Union, Japan, Malaysia and Australia consumers demand labelling so they can exercise choice between foods that have genetically modified, conventional or organic origins.

Since its implementation in April 2004, EU Regulation 1829/2003 (labeling of genetically modified food and feed) has caused both food and feed manufacturers in Europe as well as their overseas suppliers a great deal of concern.

All genetically modified foods intended for sale in Australia and New Zealand must undergo a safety evaluation by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), an independent government agency. FSANZ will not approve a GM food unless it is safe to eat. It is mandatory for GM foods to be identified on food labels in Australia and New Zealand. These requirements became law in December 2001 and were put in place by food ministers to assist consumers to purchase or avoid GM foods, depending on their own views and beliefs.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture says the industry faces huge losses if mandatory labelling is implemented. The fear is that consumers will see the labels as a warning and avoid these foods, and that food processors will reformulate their products to avoid GM foods rather than place labels. It also says labels will increase the price of foods produced and processed in Canada.

"The fact is, it is virtually impossible to even conceive of a testing procedure to assess the health effects of genetically engineered foods when introduced into the food chain, nor is there any valid nutritional or public interest reason for their introduction." Richard Lacey: Professor of Food Safety, Leeds University.

These biotech companies are only worried about profits, not our health.

the fda has also allowed the drug companies to use us as guinie-pigs. the stratagy seems to be to run a drug out there, make a quick 4 billion, pay 3 billion to settle lawsuits and lawyers and the judcious purchace of politicians and lobbiest and you have a cool 1 billion in profit. nice.

Um, all common veggies are genetically altered. What do you think man has been doing since they originally domesticated them? Wild corn looks like it does in the grocery store? I think not. Organic food is a really huge scam also. It is way less efficient. This increase in resources causes damage to the environment for no proven health benefits. Most "organic" food is the same as the other stuff. It just costs more and says "organic" on it. Don't be a chump.

Uh-oh....you are stomping all over the anti-big corporate America group and anti-genetically modified food religion group. That's as bad as stomping all over the climate change people after they found out that the people doing the investigating were BSing the results. All this "data" is from special interests groups. Same outfits that claim that cellphones cause brain tumors. They use incomplete and flawed investigations and claim them as facts. It's an old trick and they do it well. All you have to do is "follow the money trail". Dr. Mae-Wan Ho makes a nice living writing books against genetic modifications and Mavis Butcher seems to be someone who writes on the "Disabled World" website, but is otherwise an unknown quantity. Hardly neutral sources or people I would use as authoratitive.

BTW....I agree with you 100%. But you won't convince any of these people. They are the same as religious fanatics.

Well I am also the "kiss of death" when it comes to association. You will see all the little negative icons above all my posts. The liberals/progressives/communis ts have targeted me and follow me around here like puppy dogs. I'm surprised they haven't found me here yet. But they will. I have put all of them in "ignore mode", since you won't convince them or change their opinions, no matter what you say.

In this case you are the sheeple. The government says genetically modified food is the same as real food and does not require special labeling. So you are with big brother on that issue. Congratulations!

You are wrong about organic food, though. If it is gm, it can't be labeled organic. Of course, your government buddies, the FDA & the USDA, don't police their big agi friends. You should be happy about that.

that's right, when it comes to any oversight as in the fda, usda, epa, the goverment is all but awol, although they still are a big financial burden on the people they're supposed to be safeguarding.the fda has become a patent mill for the drug companies, but the tax-payer is still the one burdened with thier upkeep.

that's why i was a little excited when i heard of the teabaggers. i was thinking boston tea party where they revolted over taxation without representation. but they've allowed themselves to be hy-jacked by right-wing nuts and lost all credability. we have to revolt over the taxes we're forced to pay. as long as there is this much money piled up, the rats and cockroaches will infest.
