The south should separate from the rest of the united states. We'd be better off without them and they believe they'll be better off without us.

The original post is succinct! That means brief and accurate for all of the Mississippians. The only people who will defend the state, are people who are raised here, and have never experienced the rest of America. Hypocritical religious ignorant zealots rejoice your state! Please respond with "Yankee just leave" like you have been saying for 100 years.

. I beg to differ not all Yankees are the same as the ones you mentioned in this.

I get dirty stares everytime I'm there just because I'm brown. Haha. I only stop by there at maybe a gas station or something to eat, but I get death stares everywhere. This is only when I am going from New Orleans to Miami and back. I'd never live here.

I don't think you have that exactly right
the southern states are more obese than the northern ones... and mississippi is the most obese state at a percent over 75. Would not recommend coming here (I do live there)

I am a sixteen year old who has lived all over the USA. I must say that no, Mississippians are not all fat and lazy or even horrible. Yes, there are individuals that fit this description but it is rash to say the entire state is bad. Every state has its pros and cons but no state is any one thing. I'm not sure of all of your ages, but I hope that you all are younger than I am because I hope the adults of this country, the ones who provide the backbone of our society, would not say such close minded things. The adults of the USA know better than to generalize their fellow citizens because they have been cultured to just how important and wonderful every human being is. We are so lucky to live in this country. We are so blessed to have Mississippi at all. Any place that has freedom and relative safety is wonderful. You all must be preteens because any American adult knows this...by the way, I am of mixed heritage, am both a "Yankee" and a southerner. I am East and West. I have lived in the city and country. I, and others like me are the future of the United States. Any biased statement is a scar on our country. I am proud of those of you who commented positively as I have. For those of you who did not, I hope you are preteens.

Please tell me what's wrong with Guy Harvey t-shirts? Many educated people enjoy fishing along with some of our Navy Seals. Guy Harvey is an artist. I find it neat that he uses his talent on a shirt. It looks much better than a Idiotic rap shirt Niggman.

You may think it sucks down here, but you never hear of anyone retiring and moving north. We know the War of Northern Aggression is over, and we know that we lost. We are not the ones that keep fighting it. People from up north coming down here and telling us how best to mind our own business is what keeps fueling the fire. If you don't like Mississippi or the South in general, then go up north, back east, or out west. It is that simple.

Not true. Stop throwing everyone in the same category. You know how many southerners I know who are hella nosy? Yet I don't go around making generalizations like "them southerners are hella nosy!" because I know that is not true.

I'm from the north (new york & new jersey) & I actually like misssissippi! My visit there along with alabama & florida was more exciting than anything I've seen up here. Maybe it's because I haven't been in the south long but I can't fathom why anyone would hate it! I do agree with people from the north making negative comments about it. If u don't like it, take ur ass on up outa there or shut the hell up!

You never hear of anyone retiring and moving north because once you get trapped here, you are unable to move to better places. I agree with the op's concept. I feel they may misunderstand disability and welfare. Those are just symptoms of a larger issue.

I grew up in MS and moved out after turning 18. Spent 16 years away before reluctantly moving back. The issues that hold MS back has only gotten worse. The main factors for the horrible condition this state is in would be, Conservatives, Christians, and racism.

Conservatives - want to keep everything just the way it is. rarely accept change.
Christians - self righteous and hypocritical, become narcissist of conservative thinking.
Racism - superiority complex and unwillingness to accept differences.
These aren't the only factors, but what a powerful brew for failure is created when all three are so prominent in a society with a "small town mentality."

When MS starts embracing different concepts, arts, cultures, and political views, it will be among the best places to live. But sadly, this isn't the current situation.

Mississippi has its pros, but they are being drowned out by the sickness of their unwillingness to embrace new things. So many good people, with truly good hearts, have been manipulated by the small town trap.

So many racists here look at symptoms of issues and blame one another for them. Never really addressing the cause of the symptoms and always pointing fingers. Black Mississippians get a bad rep for the actions of the few who use desperate measures to survive in such a horrible economy. Whites get a bad rep for the loud obnoxious views of the few more unintelligent ones, who blame other races for the symptoms they can point out. Whites need to look at the big picture and realize that poverty can be placed on any race. But it was most certainly forced onto the black race so long ago, and still effects them.

Christians need to be more open minded, should talk less, and listen more. Most Christians force the narrative of large media corporations and are very predictable with their misinformed beliefs. Drive through most cities in MS and you will find more churches than gas stations. Big beautiful ornate churches woven in between all the poverty stricken homes. From my eyes, it looks like a wolf in sheep's clothing preying on the innocent faith of so many poverty stricken families.

There is such a huge drought of artistic influence in Mississippi, and not hard to realize that Christianity and Conservatism is to blame. This world needs creative and open minded thinkers. Mississippi is stuck in a huge rut. How far down should the poverty level become before the US government takes over this poorly governed system, and mandate changes be made to encourage economic growth.

It would be a stretch to say that Mississippi is the Detroit of the United States, but Mississippi has never seen the glory that Detroit once knew. Let us be an example of the terrible hindrance that conservatism and closed mindedness can have on a society.

Mississippi people are funny. Their ignorance causes a lot of harm to a great deal of people and they're proud of it. And if they need the promise of heaven before they can be decent to each other that's just messed up. And as far as they're take on blacks, if my ancestors built your state for free you better damn sure show me respect. Doctors there think you can get HIV by shaking hands, what does that tell you? And of course Mississippi would defend their state by pointing out the lovely trees and the fact that they care about family. Care about family...as opposed to what...eating them with a fork and knife? You want a cookie because you got knocked up now? What's the going rate for playing with bubble wrap?

I have lived in Mississippi all my life. Senatobia is my hometown, northwestern corner of the state. Honestly, I hate it. The people are nice, sure, but they're also prejudicial. Not everyone, but most people. And if you aren't a Christian, conservative, football loving god fearing Mississippian, everyone shuns you. There's no diversity here whatsoever. The political environment is stagnant, most towns are exactly the same...racism is less prevalent now but still very much alive. Mississippi never wants change or progress or anything different really, the whole state just wants to stay the same. An alderman in my own town turned down a recycling proposition that would have done wonders for the entire county just because he thought recycling was a fad. Mississippi is full of people who hate change and most of them are skittish and superstitious and entirely too conservative.
