You are correct, lets just keep the local kids picking pineapples and working in hotels while the asians and haoles get a good education...if Hawaii is such a backwater, get the hell out! WE DON"T NEED YOU!!

...It's people like you the keeps racist and prejudice alive in this world. Your response is not at all true. If you choose a path towards picking pineapples, that's solely your discretion, who's stopping you from getting an education? Your destiny and career path is what you and only you make of it. Don't place blames on other especially in regards to racial remarks!
... In regards to UCERA, as a past employee I'd have to agree with most of you, money is definitely better spent somewhere else. That place is corrupt!
Hey Kris, I guess you missed my sarcasm!

You are more right on then you know, but.... the true problem is the people that they have had running this business for years, not the new people who came in. They don't tell you that! The consultants discovered this mess & were booted out!

From the article, it appears you have high executive salaries, highly paid consultant without proper oversight, no clear mission as the original mission described by the article is at odds with the mission described by Ms. Blanchette.
The organization looks like a quasi government agency set-up as a non-profit to skirt regulations and oversight. Disband it, lets not throw tax money in the form of loans at this inept organization.

It's because they need & want change to run an appropriate business but when you get someone here who can better something the red tape & BS shuts them down. I am an employee at UCERA & that article was a fluff BS peice. If the people of Hawaii only knew the real story I think you would think before you speak!!
Both Kent & Jerry did great things for UCERA & someone else is getting recognition for uncovering & fixing the problems. As far as the Board members being surprised, they know & have know what is going on here for a very long time!

» Kent Vaughn, a consultant from Mississippi hired last January on a five-year contract to implement a recovery plan, returned to the mainland in September with a severance package -- along with colleague Jerry D. McCearley and other personnel
What's this problem with UH hiring people who violate their contracts, yet walk away with a severance pay package costing us taxpayers $ hundreds of thousands $$$ maybe millions! I thought the UH football fiasco with June Jones and Frazier, both ending their contracts prematurely, yet walked away with severance package worth $$$$hundreds of thousands?
If private companies allow such "sweetheart deals", they would be bankrupt in no time, but taxpayers will always end up holding the empty bag. It should be written in the contract, no severance pay if contract is terminated before it expires, how simple can that be? Also have a merit for pay performance, quit early without producing positive results, then no paycheck or severance pay, go file for unemployment!
Good work on Patricia Blanchette's part, it should be a requirement to have top administrators with dual backgrounds especially in business.

Kent & Jerry did do great things for UCERA. They came in and Kent refused to give in to the BS, hats off to him. It was very clear that they did not know what they were walking into and only the few were honest with them and the rest thought they could make the new COO their new puppet and continue to run the show but Kent put a stop to it.
The real issue is that there are still too many chiefs and not enough indians-literally. The overall morale is the lowest it has ever been and if they don't take the time to stop and pay attention to who they do have they will one day show up to an empty office. The staff at UCERA work very hard to do their very best and should be recognized and respected as this is their bread and butter.
UCERA will pull through and the unity is happening but things like this do not create a positive environment for their employees. They are trying their best and are all working working towards the greater cause to support the University and the reputation of the only Medical School Hawaii has.
Focus on the future and stop dwelling on the past.
