A former Teen Challenge student exposes this abusive Christian alcohol and drug program. Although seen by many as a worthwhile organization, Teen Challenge has a dark side, one of pathological abuse and an obsession with the almighty dollar.

I totally agree with you. I myself was a former student and experience first hand how important the "DOLLAR" was to the program. Racism and conforming to their religious belief was also part of what I had to deal with.

"Their religious belief" is right. They claimed that "Lutherans pray to Martin Luther," and I wasted no time setting them straight. Luckily there was a good staff member named Kerry Sullivan who solved the problem; some of those other nuts that masqueraded as staff members would get in someone's face and scream at the top of their lungs. There are countless former "students" who would love to meet one of those "screamers" alone on the street, and I'm one of them.

I by passed Teen-Challange for a program that was based on the teen-challange program(The Freedom Christian center), yet I was suppose to be able to keep my two little girls with me upon a judge ordering me to complete the program or go to the pen. After we arrived my girls were taken to a family in the church and we were allowed three visits a week two of which were during church. after about three months of pure hell in the program and finding bruses on my 18month old daughter I opted the pen over having my girls abused...

That's really sad that you had such a bad experience there. I would hope that a Christian program would have Christians who really care about their clients. I have only heard good things about the program.

I have nothing but good things to say about the Teen Challenge program. My son was a severe drug addict and had attempted suicide following his wife's sudden death. He was taking around 100 pills a weekend. He went from one script doctor to another using approximately 8-10 doctors each month for over 10 years to get his fix. He is now preaching and is totally delivered. His greatest desire is to help others who are bound. He continues to work for the organization to this day.

There will always be quitters in the teen challenge program because like my son (graduated from Teen Challenge) said, "Mom, they don't call it a challenge for nothing." You have to really want a change in your life and be willing to do whatever it takes including working 5 days a week and doing fund raising on some saturdays. It is not abusive. The drugs or alchohol that brought you there were abusive. Most of the people that enter teen challenge have been unable to keep a job because of there chemical abuse. Some are ordered by the courts to do a program or go to prison because of so many crime related issues due to the drug abuse. You have to take ownership for what brought you there to begin with before you point the finger at a program for MAKING you work. Yes, money is important for you to earn because you are being taught with materials which cost money, feed 3 meals a day which costs money and given a warm bed to sleep in which costs money. There are no free rides in life but, addicts have a tendency to feel sorry for themselves and expect the rest of the world to take care of them. I thank God my son has taken ownership for what brought him there and he embraced it with his whole heart. It is truly life changing for those that truly want their life changed. So far as the man that blames the program for his daughter. Buddy, you put her there because of YOUR drug or alchohol abuse. If you were not using, she would have been in a secure stable loving home. Accept responsibility for your child being in another home to begin with!!!!! Get off your pity pot and grow up and take ownership. Quit blaming the rest of the world for the problems you put your family in to begin with.

Jesus Christ used the Teen Challenge program in Brooklyn, NY to change my life. I was a heroine and cocaine addict at 16 and entered the program by 18 because I was days away from death(according to the doctor that treated me). Teen Challenge was not easy to complete but it was worth every minute of it. I live a normal life now at 30 years old with three beautiful sons. I can't speak for every Teen Challenge center but I know everyones walk with Christ is personal and we shouldn't push our hardships on discouraging others to enter the program. God bless to all still struggling with addiction!

Teen Challenge does require that students help to raise funds only because the student is not being charged $1,000 a week for its services. If you want a program that does not require you to assist in "paying your way" good luck...Insurance only covers so many "treatment days" until they too will require that you contribute to your recovery. Nothing is free...so quit complaining. Also, no one forces anyone to enter a "faith-based" rehab...that to is your choice. Own up dude. I think the biggest misconception about Teen Challenge in this man's opinion was that just because it's Christian, the program would coddle him. What good would that have done? Absolutely none.

my son has been in tci for 14 months . has not been an easy ride for him. but extremely thankful that he is there and is completing the process. It takes a strong man that wants to change his life. its not about money or trying to change beliefs. there is no abuse. my son and i write weekly. I send money for him and as donations to help. the guys work hard. and for some guys that think that is abuse will never change. the ones that complain will prob never succeed in life. the ones that work hard and do what they are told and do not complain. are the ones that will succeed in life. My son has changed I believe it and time will tell after he graduates in Feb of 2012. we adopted him at age 14. his life was destroyed by his birth parents up to that age. he then came to our home and we fell in love with him. drugs sex disrespect to adults was all he knew. he went to teen challenge by order of the court at age 19 He is now 21 . thanks to teen challenge and the assembly of God church and all the supporters. God Bless you.

I went to teenchallenge. It really shook me at how controlling they were. I stayed for a good six months thinking maybe I would see it there way??? I never could. The six months I stayed girls ranaway non-stop. It was really sad. I was always put on discipline. Be it my behavior wasn't acceptable or to there standards. They took me off my depression medicine(refused to take me for refills). While I was there no type of counseling was given like the woman I spoke to said would be done. I was completely isolated and they lied to my caseworker who brought me there they told her I ran. I never received my letters from my family the woman in charge (marcia) would read and if she didn't like what she said sent it back! I thought this program would of brought healing to my life. Instead made me feel more alone and worthless then when I joined the program. Teenchallenge really caused a lot of problems for my family they were hurt! My family thought I was mad with them. I would never ever reccomend anyone going to teenchallenge. And the begging for money was embarrassing. As a woman I was not at all happy standing at truckstops asking people for money.I feel teenchallenge is a joke. A bunch of power hungry knuckleheads who's intentions of "helping" are actually harmful. Teenchallenge can rott for all I care.
