VIDEO: Town Hall Attendees Tell GOP Rep. That Ending Medicare Is ‘Unconscionable,’ Demand ‘Tax The Rich!’

As ThinkProgress has been reporting, all over the country a Main Street Movement of ordinary Americans is fighting back against right-wing attacks on their basic services and safety net. In recent days, this movement has been focused on conservative legislators who voted for the GOP budget plan that would effectively end Medicare.

Rep. Charlie Gibson (R-NY) felt the heat of that movement last week when constituents responded to his fear mongering about undocumented immigrants not paying taxes by asking him,“You mean like GE?!” Yesterday, at yet another town hall meeting captured on YouTube, his constituents angrily and passionately rejected the GOP’s budget plan and demanded that the rich pay their fair share.

At one point, a young man named Daniel challenged Gibson about eliminating Medicare and handing seniors over to insurance companies. Gibson earned lengthy applause from the audience when he said it is “unconscionable” to put Medicare in the hands of the insurance industry:

GIBSON: As it [the GOP plan] relates to out of pocket costs, I think that’s an assumption you’re making as to how the insurance companies would react to that, isn’t it, Daniel?

DANIEL: No, actually the Congressional Budget Office, a nonpartisan organization, said that this would cost about 68 percent of seniors’[income for] health care. And you mentioned how Congress, it’ll be like what Congress has, and yet they only pay about 28 percent.

GIBSON: Well, this is coming from the Congressional Budget Office, the figures that I have… I think the open question is how are the specifics of the law written, as it relates to the insurance company’s role in this. That’s where I think the specifics are yet to be defined.

DANIEL: I’ll have to disagree and say that the more important thing is that Medicare is something there’s been a consensus for decades that this is important American institution and to put in the hands of the health insurance industry who obviously are only concerned with their own profits is unconscionable.

(applause from audience)

GIBSON: I have to tell you one last thing though, if you’re preparing our proposal with the status quo, that’s a false choice. The CBO says that in a decade the plan’s going to be broke. Something has to be done to save it.

MULTIPLE PEOPLE IN CROWD: Tax the rich!(applause from audience)

Watch it:

At the same town hall, Gibson was also booed over his vote to de-fund Planned Parenthood and angrily confronted over claiming that the GOP plan does not privatize Medicare.

Relax Comrade

Medicare Needs to be hospitalized for a while to save it's life, The reasonable and conservative are are aware that this congress must have the courage to face the dependentants and ask them to pay for their own health care for a while,

At the will of the US congress MEDICAID must have the "Barnacles removed from it's body or it will cease to float. It is "UNCONCONCINABLE" for very aware citizens to expect anything less.

The hetrodyne of painful squealing and whining will for a while be irration, but the results of a sound medicare sytem will be worth if for Americas Youth that according to plan will also be old.

Senior citizens scare Paul Ryan out of town hall over taxes, Medicare

by Joan McCarter.

Rep. Paul Ryan's budget plan to maintain tax cuts for rich people and corporations and take healthcare coverage away for huge chunks of the middle class isn't going over so well back home.

Ryan wanted everyone to be "polite" in front of the media, which apparently means "don't question my plan."
There was capacity crowd inside the school’s Madrigrana Auditorium.
"Do not renew the Bush tax credit for the wealthy," one man said during the public comment period, even giving out his phone number in front of everyone. "I'll debate these issues with you anytime, just call me."

At times, the Janesville Republican sounded more like a referee than a lawmaker.

"If you're yelling, I just want to ask you to leave," Ryan requested. "If you're going to scream out like that, it's just not polite to everyone. We've got media here. Let's prove to them that Wisconsinites can be cordial with one another."

It's also not "polite" to take healthcare away from some of the nation's most vulnerable citizens, as Ryan would do with his Medicare- and Medicaid-slashing plan. But I guess that's different.

Ryan took police advice and bid a hasty retreat from the protesters and the questioners at the meeting, leaving through the back door in a different car than the one he arrived in, and stiffing a local television station that had scheduled an interview with him.

Public not so keen on GOP ideas

by DemFromCT.

So, you have your choice of headlines and polls. From Gallup, we have Americans Divided Over Ryan vs. Obama Deficit Plans, noting that Republicans love the Ryan plan, Democrats hate it and indies are split. What is also evident, though not in the headline, is that those making over 75K, whites, and those over 30 prefer Ryan, while 18-29, under 75K and non-whites prefer the Democratic/Obama alternative.

And from this, you might conclude the Ryan gamble is paying off. But not so fast. Check out:

House G.O.P. Members Face Voter Anger Over Budget

Medicare Plan puts GOP on Defensive

GOP lawmaker Dan Webster's town hall turns ugly

Republicans regroup on Medicare, budget plan

Anger Rising Over GOP Budget-Cut Plans
Add to that Greg Sargent:
Paul Ryan heckled by angry protestors: This will generate a lot of chatter today: According to WTMJ in Wisconsin, Ryan himself got a real earful at a town hall meeting from protestors who are furious over his proposal to end Medicare as we know it.
Seniors held up signs saying “hands off my Medicare,” and chanted that Ryan should “stop lying,” according to the report. Also note that Ryan was forced to leave in a different vehicle than he arrived in.
It's early in the process, and when low-information voters are given a choice between a GOP and a Dem alternative, it's easy to pick sides even if you don't know what's in the budget.
After you know? We'll see. But if you want examples of what the public does know, check out the GOP governors who represent the enaction of GOP principles. The latest to poll poorly once he implemented his program is PA's Tom Corbett.

Big Jump In Disapproval For Pennsylvania Governor, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Gov's Budget Unfair, Voters - Especially Women - Sayand if you want to know how the GOP responds to pressure, look no further than John Boehner.

So maybe it wasn’t the best timing in the world: Even as House Republicans face tough questions at their town hall meetings about Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget plan, Speaker John Boehner has given an interview in which he said Ryan’s plan was an idea “worthy of consideration” and that he wasn’t “wedded to it.”
Pity the poor Speaker. The more the public knows about GOP policies, the worse Republican leaders do with the public, from John Boehner on down.

Gallup: Negative views of Tea Party at new high

by DemFromCT.

More weak tea from Gallup:

Gallup began tracking Americans' views of the Tea Party in March 2010, when 37% had a favorable and 40% an unfavorable view. Those views stayed roughly the same through January of this year, but have now turned somewhat more negative. The April 20-23 USA Today/Gallup poll finds favorable opinions of the Tea Party movement dropping to 33%, from 39% in January, and unfavorable opinions rising to 47% from 42%. Twenty percent of Americans say they haven't heard of the Tea Party or have no opinion of it.

Republicans and conservatives (i.e., tea party members) still like it, but you know what? They ain't a majority. More and more of the rest of us think it sucks.

But here's something you probably didn't know.

The Tea Party has a relatively strong appeal to men aged 50 and older, 49% of whom have favorable opinions of the movement. By contrast, women aged 50 and older are the most negative, with more than half holding a negative opinion.

Once again, there's strong evidence women are smarter than men. And don't you be blaming all seniors for Tea Party support when it's only the the menfolk who are deluded.

And while we are at it, note:

Southerners are most positive about the Tea Party across regions, with essentially equal favorable and unfavorable opinions. Americans living on either coast are the most negative.
Bottom line:

The data reviewed here demonstrate the nature of the political challenges Republican congressional leadership faces in responding to Tea Party-supported members. A majority of rank-and-file Republicans nationwide give the Tea Party favorable ratings, but a sizable minority say their opinion is unfavorable or do not classify themselves as supporters.

Further, the overall image of the Tea Party among all Americans has become substantially more negative than positive over the last several months, which could weaken its perceived clout among GOP congressional leaders. Americans' negative views of the Tea Party contrast with their much more balanced views of the Republican Party, measured at 44% favorable and 47% unfavorable in the same April 20-23 USA Today/Gallup poll.

The Tea Party image is only going to get worse as it gets more and more closely associated with birthers, the Donald, and ending Medicare as we know it. The "nature of the political challenges Republican congressional leadership faces", as Gallup puts it, is that their program will prove extremely unpopular.

Run on that, Republicans.

Rep. Rick Crawford abruptly ends town meeting after tough budget questions

by Joan McCarter

Add Arkansans to the list of folks not so supportive of the Republican plan to slash Medicare and Medicaid and keep taxes low for the rich. Freshman Rep. Rick Crawford heard all about it in his very first town meeting and apparently was scared off.

Watch the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch...

Crawford faced a heated question about why the GOP budget cuts taxes for the wealthy and corporations while slashing social services. Crawford replied,“I don’t support tax cuts for the wealthy over help for socio-economically challenged individuals.” A number of his constituents repeatedly challenged him on this claim, accusing Crawford of “class warfare against the poor people” and explaining that tax cuts don’t create jobs. Crawford apparently did not appreciate this, and ended the session:

CONSTITUENT 1:[The GOP budget ] is a significant tax cut for the wealthy.

CRAWFORD: A 10 percent tax cut?

CONSTITUENT 2: Wouldn’t that be class warfare against the poor people?

CRAWFORD: Well, you’re asking me if I want to continue taxing at a higher rate the people that are creating jobs and no –

CONSTITUENT 2: They’re not creating jobs, though! They haven’t created any more jobs!… They’re taking them all overseas!

CONSTITUENT 3: Are you taking any more questions?

CRAWFORD: No, we’re done.

CONSTITUENT 3: We’re done?

CRAWFORD: We’re done.

And Crawford just might be.

Remember all the Tea Party disruptions at the health insurance reform town halls that Democratic members of Congress held some time ago? Do you ever remember any one of those challengers get arrested, thrown in solitary confinement, and even maced during her time in jail? Well, that's what happened to progressive radio host Nicole Sandler when she asked Tea Party Congressman Allen West a question at a recent "Town Hall" event. Of course, this is the same Allen West who said that liberal women were neutering American men. So maybe that's why Ms. Sandler had to be arrested, thrown into solitary, and maced. Because poor old Allen West was afraid for his balls.

Hello everyone from sunny Michigan. This afternoon the Detroit Free Press is reporting that a panel of Washrenaw County judges voted 2-1 to approve the language of a recall petition to remove Gov. Rick Snyder from office.

What this means is that we Michiganders have 90 days from today to gather 800,000 signatures and force a recall election.

People who do it the right way by working and paying taxes, should be able to keep their Health Insurance through their employer at the same rate (Still Paying) and the employer should be able to deduct their portion that is paid for the retired employee from their company taxes. Why should the workers be screwed by the Medicare system with limits on Healthcare? The Doctors should wake up also. How many patients on Public Assistance do they have to treat? Those people probably never worked a day in their life! 4,5,6 kids and screaming they deserve everything free!

Thanks for the post Joan. Sounds like he hastily snuck out the back door like a common criminal. Does he really believe retired seniors who have worked all their life agree with him? Medicare is already limiting care for seniors. And they aren't very courteous about it when you call.
