Because I lived and taught near Minneota for nearly twenty years, I was able to meet Bill Holm several times. Sometimes that meeting came under formal circumstances, like a presentation about writing or about his experience teaching in China. Other chance meetings would occur in a place like a small-town cafe. Always he was larger than life, always thoroughly enjoying life. I so appreciated that he always returned to southwestern Minnesota. The winters are wild there, but the people are very dear.
Once on public radio he said that he had just finished judging a writing contest in Wyoming. He said every single submission was too long, and he blamed writers' use of wordprocessing. He said that writers fell in love with the look of their writing on the screen and wouldn't edit or revise. He much preferred writing by hand, and the self-editing that was part of that.
My sympathy to his family.

I loved his writing - that will live on. He'll be missed by many in western MN. Every one knows him out there.

Keillor has become like the Simpson's TV show. Banal as a walking down the City Center Mall. Hey it rhymes.

I'm more into reality than poetry.

He was a big man, with a big personality and a big heart with room for all. I will miss him.

Thank you Mary Divine for this excellent article that shares with the world the spirit and contributions of this man we, as Minnesotans, were so lucky to have as a neighbor. Coming Home Crazy is one of my all time favorite books and I believe influenced my beliefs about culture so many years ago. Thanks Mr. Holm for being you and having the courage and dedication to share your thoughts with the rest of us. I too love Iceland and though I never met you, I feel there is a connection that transcends the physical that joins all who appreciate your work, the insights on your travels, and your solid footing of home and heart.
