The justification offered in favor of the hunt is that where there are more wolves, there are also more of the very few wolves which may commit depredation on livestock.

Therefore instead of removing those few individual wolves, say 5% or less, they are going to kill 19 of every twenty wolves at random until the depredation is reduced.

If the DNR wants to reduce the depredation by one half, the hunt will be reducing the wolf population to half of its current numbers to achieve this.

If they only propose a 10% reduction in depredation and population this will, due to wolves' compensating for hunting by increasing reproduction, require killing several times that 10% of the adult wolf population, a third or more merely to reduce the next year's wolf population by 10%.

If other control options are used they will be the real management program as far as reducing depredation is concerned, with the sport hunt/trapping a part of it in the same way as the sugary cereal pictured with the egg and bacon and toast and orange juice counts as "part of this nutritious breakfast" by defining "part of" as "in the same general location as" or "having to be worked around to reach", but certainly representing the majority of the wolves killed nevertheless, as it is really its own self-reinforcing justification.

Excuse me, Pete? Is there any particular part of that you disagree with? I thought I was detailing the DNR's expressed position.
