An Open Letter to Governor Jennifer Granholm, regarding Michigan's
economic development and the possibility of emulating the
"Colorado model"
18 October 2006
Dear Governor Granholm,
In 2004 I moved back to my native Michigan after 18 years in
Colorado. When I moved to Colorado in 1986, the economy was in
sorry shape due to the falling price of minerals and a failing
mining industry. The response of Democratic governor Roemer was
to pass a steep tourist tax and invest it all in public
transportation and promotion of tourism. The plan worked
beautifully. Colorado's economy not only recovered, but excelled.
When I left in 2004, Colorado enjoyed one of the lowest
unemployment rates in the nation. I moved back in part because
the booming economy had resulted in dramatic appreciation of real
estate, such that I could no longer afford to live there!
The tax dollars were used for mass transportation to the tourist
areas. Denver suburbanites could jump on the ski train and spend
the weekend skiing in the mountains, or relaxing at a spa, cheaply
and conveniently. It strikes me as ironic that Michigan has so
much scenic beauty, and such huge tourist potential -- all greatly
underutilized because of our addiction to the automobile and
reluctance to develop public transportation.
Back when we all worked for the auto industry, we could afford to
drive up north and take advantage of our beautiful Michigan
outdoor recreation oppertunities. Now that things have changed,
many of us would still like to take advantage of our resort areas
but can not access them because of transportation issues.
I don't understand why some of the vacant manufacturing space left
by industry fleeing overseas cannot be used to create the mass
transit facilities to encourage tourism commerce. Right now a bus
from Detroit to Traverse City will take 12 hours -- impractical
for the average weekender. People still want to travel, though not
everyone can afford private transportation. How about trains?
It's time to abandon wishful thinking about the
manufacturing-based economy re-living its old glory-days. New
models of economic development are necessary. It's time to move
on. The Colorado model points the way. Our great and beautiful
state can once again lead the nation.
Sincerely,
Leeann K. Smith, RN

Jennifer Granholm has done nothing for the state of Michigan except line her pockets. I live in Jackson and in the summer of 2006 a factory called TRW closed 400 people lost their jobs! Now she has been re-elected and it will be 4 more years of the same bs! There are no jobs around and if you find out it is in another city and you have to commute.
I am getting married and moving to Indiana. We have decided not to get married in Michigan because we have no plans to live here. Indiana has jobs and their Unemployment Rate is 2.5 whereas Jackson is 8.9. She has done nothing and will do nothing for Michigan. Sorry Jenny! but people are leaving your state because of you and your poor leadership.

All I have to say is Goodbye to Michigan I am getting married in Indiana because I have no reason to get married here because I am not going to live here why give money to Michigan when the unemployment rate is 8.9 and in Indiana it is only 2.5 I have another friend getting married and moving to Indiana where they actually HAVE JOBS!
4 more years of Jennifer Granholm we don't need we needed a real governor who can get jobs here. She will do nothing for Michigan in the next 4 years because she has done nothing for Michigan when she was first elected in 2002. I will never move back here I love Indiana and thats where I will call home. You didn't do your job Mrs. Granholm and I'm sorry that I have stayed this long in a state that can't help its people while you sit in Lansing lining your pockets every chance you get.

I am a youth specialist that works at camp Nokomis up in Houghton Lake. I have a great job and work very hard to help our cleints. Currently there has been a push to close state facilities dealing with juveniles, and I have to tell you that disheartens me. Everyone thinks that private facilities are cheaper, they are not they just better at playing a shell game with state funds. Take Wolverine it costs $236.00 dollars a day per youth were as nokomos spends $243.00 per youth. Wow sounds like your saving some money right? NOT here is where the ball goes under the shell ready? Wolverine doesn't have to spend a dime on schooling or medical needs. The state does and is not included in there $236.00 a day per youth adding another $8000.00 per year to each youth thus pushing there numbers to $257.00. Our numbers include schooling and medical needs for our cleints. I know for a fact that letter will not influence you in any way. Hell, I be impressed if you even looked at it. Most of the people in this community are struggling and it just disheartens me that more michigan jobs and services will go by the way side because of the continual bureaucratic shell games.

Wow, interesting responses to say the least!

OK, leeann, sooo you want Michigan to follow this same path? Push tourism to the point you can no longer live here? I honestly cannot follow your logic!! We have AWESOME landscape and beautiful wilderness still available here; without a doubt! But how would promoting tourism to the point residents can't afford to live here any longer help anything? Maybe a quick fix, but uhh, you don't live in Colorado any longer do you? Did you really write this letter?!?!? <lmao>

michael tinsley: I'm barely surviving; I get a disconnect notice every month from consumers (and others) because I can only afford to survive barely, I'm not really moving forward in money. I pay $500/mth in CS for my son. It sucks, it does and I'd love to have him live with me with all my heart. But, I've never missed a payment. It may be crossing over the line to suspend licenses because after all, you could be feeding your child with that. Too bad you say you owe $29,000 in CS!!! Yet you can afford to pay your licenses every year; grow up and be a man. I would support you if you didn't whine and would've offered something constructive in your argument.

Kurtis shaw: yeah I don't know the politics that well, but I know your post was informational at least. I only drive by seeing the signs for houghton lake when I go up north.

One more thing for dead beat dad, aka michael tinsley...

Of course the money doesn't go to your daughter you dumb %^&*...it's because YOU DON'T PAY ANYTHING!!! worthless ^&*(

My apologies, but I'm a daddy that loves my son and swallows up the whole un-fair child support system we have here. I can only hope that things better as the days go on.

Why do dad's get away with not paying child support in Osceola County MIchigan. How can a dead beat dad be allowed to pay $8.00 a week and get away with not paying. My son is now twenty years old and we are still waiting on the county of Osceola and the FOC to do their job. First of all how can anyone support a child on that amount of help. I say hats off to the Osceola County Friend of the Court for working to protect dead beat dads and hurting the child and custodial parent. That's our tax dollars at work paying the Osceola FOC pay checks who protect dead beat dads'!

KiKi STFU! Atleast your getting something, if the shoe was on the other foot I am sure you would not be paying half of that because the FOC dont go after women for child support when the man has custody.

well lets see granholm has raised the min wage now all the businesses are leaving the state

she then wishes to raise taxes to compensate for all the people that are out of jobs because there are no businesses to employ them

michigan on average pays the highest amount of gas prices in the country

she dumps her canadian garbage here in our state yes she's a canuck

i think she should get paid 7.00 an hr thats about all shes worth because of her obvious lack of foresight for her poor decisions in this state
we will be blown away alright right out of the state ! lack of money means more businesses suffer " granholm sucks"

I think you are right.. my son only owes 1000 and everytime it gets over that amount they arrest him he has been looking for a job and the area he is in has little or none. it is terrible to keep picking on these men, there are some that run and run, but for the most part these mothers just keep on going after these men because they can. and the court feels bad for them.. let them go out and work to. what is wrong with them, why should they sit back and do nothing about supporting there childred. they had them to. you fathers need to stand up and speak back. who the heck do these people think they are anyways.. treating you guys that way. it is not right. putting you in jail does not solve the problem does it now.. think about it. ya cant pay while you are in there and they charge you for being in there and if you had a job when you went in your surly not going to have that job when you get out.. these people are just rude and you know whats.. I just dont get it anymore.. I dont..

Jennifer Granholm is a Money magnet.
Did you know? Michigan gas tax is 30% of the sale price. Not that Naughty little "9" thats feds.
She raises Taxes, Cuts Funding, What is she doing with all this money if the budget is still suffering?
My tuition is at Oakland university is at least double years prior, and expecting a 14% hike again soon.
Michigan Roads are worst yet, College cost twice as much, Taxes are at all time High.
I am convinced this Canadian sleeper agent, wants all Michigan residents to be illiterate and poor.
P.S Don't even think about starting a business here, Michigan is ranked in top 3, Raised from 15th from Our little Heart throb. Dear Jenny.

everyone that I have talked to said they changed their minds at the last minute and voted for her because of what she said about putting in health care, including myself. Look at all her lies!! She put her husband on the pay roll and gave him 3 staff people, 5 million on a bike trail up north. She is driving everyone but the rich out of this state. She could do something about all the foreclosures and utility shut offs but she won't.She needs to be removed from office!!!!!

I don't know about the rest of you but as her tv ad said.... "I am blown away". How far can this great state fall? We can thank the east side of the state for voting her back in. She bought their votes twice now.
